The PlushBeds Botanical Bliss is an all-latex mattress available in a 9-, 10-, and 12-inch build. You can choose between medium and medium-firm, and couples can customize their side to their needs. We recommend the 12-inch build for heavier adults and side-sleepers; lighter adults may do just fine with the 9-inch or 10-inch options.
PlushBeds makes its mattresses to order in a factory that carries Global Organic Textile Standard certification. The Botanical Bliss is Eco-INSTITUT certified and comprises entirely organic, non-toxic, and eco-friendly materials.
If a product is Eco-INSTITUT certified, you can be assured that it does not contain even trace amounts of hazardous chemicals and will not off-gas undesirable chemicals and odors into your home. Some of the chemicals the Eco-INSTITUT certification rules out include volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phthalates, formaldehyde, pesticides, heavy metals, and persistent organic pollutants.
What’s in the Botanical Bliss?
The 12-inch PlushBeds Botanical Bliss comprises:
- GOTS organic cotton cover with zipper
- GOTS organic British wool flame barrier
- GOTS organic cotton underlay to prevent the wool from bunching
- 3-inch Talalay latex comfort layer
- 3-inch Arpico latex core for lumbar support
- 6-inch Arpico latex core.
The 9-inch and 10-inch models feature one 6-inch Arpico latex layer only. The 9-inch mattress has a 2-inch Talalay latex later instead of a 3-inch layer.
Why the Botanical Bliss is our top choice
From a toxicity standpoint, we trust the Eco-INSTITUT certification, plus the Botanical Bliss is the only mattress we have tested with a third party laboratory ourselves. The Botanical Bliss boasts a smart design that offers plenty of scope for customization. We have used two generations of Botanical Bliss, and have been pleased with the quality and customer service. The main downside for us is the mattress is extremely difficult to assemble. Dragging the latex layers up the stairs is a job for two large adults and is not possible for singles, and many elderly.
The Botanical Bliss is a great choice for guest rooms because you can move the layers around to meet different sleep needs. Keep in mind that the mattress is not easy to assemble.
John, LeafScore’s founder, has been sleeping on the Botanical Bliss for many years and has had a positive experience. Read more about our Botanical Bliss staff tests, here. We also sent a Botanical Bliss latex sample to Duke University to confirm the product is free of flame retardants. A copy of the results is embedded below.
The Botanical Bliss pairs ultra-dense Arpico latex with softer and airier Talalay latex. This means the mattress offers robust underlying support for spinal alignment, with excellent resistance to indentation and sagging. The top Talalay layer provides breathability, making it easier to move around and stay cool.

Spindle keeps things simple by offering one 10-inch organic latex mattress with a layered and customizable design. Leaf Score founder, John, has even used this mattress as a Montessori bed for his child!
We love that Spindle wraps each latex layer in organic cotton. This makes it much easier to move layers around without worries over rips, tears, and direct latex exposure.
What’s in the Spindle mattress?
The 10-inch Spindle mattress comprises:
- GOLS certified organic latex – three layers, in firm, medium, or soft (at your choosing), each wrapped in organic cotton
- GOTS certified organic cotton – for the sleep surface (circular knit), side and bottom fabric (cotton canvas)
- GOTS certified organic wool – as a flame barrier around the mattress
- Polyester thread – to stitch the mattress together
- A zipper – for the cotton encasement
- Kevlar taping – to seal vulnerable seams where flame could sneak past the wool.
John, Leaf Score’s founder, uses the Spindle as a makeshift Montessori mattress/bed for his toddler. That means he’s spent a decent amount of time on the mattress when reading books before bed and at night when nightmares strike.
As suspected, John (who is a 6’2″, 180-pound, stomach-sleeper) finds the Spindle not quite firm or supportive enough for everyday use. Once this mattress moves to a guestroom, though, it will be ideal for most other adults who sleep on their side or back.
John’s favorite feature is the organic cotton wrapping on each latex layer. He says that, once you’ve built and rebuilt the Botanical Bliss as many times as he had, you start to see the genius of wrapping the raw latex layers in cotton for easier handling and durability.
Spindle labels each layer (firm, medium, or soft) to help with assembly and also lets you switch out layers for a different firmness if your initial set-up isn’t quite right. It even offers an ongoing discount for previous customers to replace layers years later, should your sleep needs change.
See why the Spindle is one of our top mattress choices for lighter adults, back-sleepers, and side-sleepers.

We were lucky enough to have Avocado staff members show off the Avocado Green Mattress in the company showroom in La Jolla, California, and we were impressed by its features and sustainability.
Avocado is a leading organic mattress maker offering eco-friendly bed-in-a-box mattresses that have the rare Made Safe certification as non-toxic. The Green is Avocado’s signature mattress and is a great choice for almost all adults. Avocado also offers this mattress wool-free and PETA-approved for vegans.
What’s in it?
The Avocado Green mattress is a hybrid latex and coil mattress comprising:
- GOTS organic cotton encasement
- (Optional Pillow-Top) 2-inch layer of GOLS Dunlop latex
- 2-inch layer of GOLS Dunlop latex
- 8-inch recycled steel coil unit with up to 1,418 individually wrapped pocket coils
- 1-inch latex base layer.
The Avocado Green stands out from its competitors thanks to the smart coil unit design. Avocado uses upcycled 16 gauge perimeter coils for reinforced edging, narrower 17 gauge coils in the middle of the mattress, and wider 14 gauge coils at the shoulder and hip. This makes it one of the few zoned hybrid latex mattresses available.
Why we love the Avocado Green
Avocado excels at transparency and traceability, with ethical sourcing of materials and labor. As the most vertically integrated mattress company around, Avocado uses latex from its co-owned cooperative farms in India and Guatemala and sources its GOTS organic wool from its co-owned farmer’s society in India.
Avocado is the first mattress company to switch most of its plastic wrap for paper! And it’s on its way to operating the first certified zero-waste mattress factory in the world!
The Avocado Green offers zoned spinal support and a responsive sleep surface. There’s also excellent edge support and minimal motion transfer. Without the pillow-top, the Green is quite firm (likely too firm for most side-sleepers). With the pillow-top, the Green combines a softer sleep surface with excellent pressure-point relief and robust core support for postural alignment.
In other words, you won’t just sink into the Avocado Green and wake up with back pain caused by a poorly made mattress.
What we don’t love
We don’t love that the Avocado Green pillow-top is fully attached. If you choose this option, you’re pretty much stuck with the pillow-top. Sure, you can unzip the top compartment and remove the latex layer, but you’ll have an empty and loose mattress cover to deal with.
The pillow top wasn’t our favorite as we compared different Avocado models. A better option, if you’re on the fence about the pillow-top, is to purchase the Green without the topper and then add an organic topper if you need one later. This also makes for more flexibility should your sleep needs change or should you decide to use this mattress for a guest room or other family member later.
Naturepedic EOS Mattress
Non-toxic, eco-friendly hybrid coil and latex mattress made in Ohio. Carries Impressive Made Safe certification. Can also be made vegan and latex-free!
Naturepedic is offering LeafScore readers 15% off their purchase using coupon code LEAFSCORE15 at checkout.
Note: We chose Naturepedic as our top pick for reusable cloth face masks due to their commitment to quality and affordable price.
- Fully customizable (can choose firmness on both sides!)
- Made in the U.S. with organic latex, wool, and cotton
- Can be made vegan or latex-free!
- MADE SAFE certified as truly non-toxic
- Can swap and replace layers at a later date
- Reinforced edge support
- Breathable and temperature-regulating
- Excellent pressure point relief with good underlying spine support
- Very heavy and has no handles
- On the higher end of the price scale
- Ships in a lot of plastic (that’s hard to recycle in most places)
The Naturepedic EOS® (Ergonomic Organic Sleep) Mattress is actually a range of mattresses that are all exceptionally well made, non-toxic, and eco-friendly. You can customize the EOS (on both sides!) to suit your sleep needs and can even choose a vegan mattress option or latex-free design (view on Naturepedic).
What’s in the Naturepedic EOS?
The Naturepedic EOS comprises:
- GOTS certified organic cotton quilt – made with cotton grown in the U.S.
- Organic wool batting plus polylactic acid (PLA) comfort layer made from non-GMO sugarcane (for moisture-wicking)
- 3-inch comfort layer of GOLS certified organic latex
- 8-inch layer of individually wrapped steel coils
- Organic cotton batting
- Organic cotton cover with solid brass zipper.
Naturepedic makes its coil contour layer in-house, wrapping each coil individually for inch-by-inch support and minimal motion transfer. The EOS design has full perimeter reinforcement for excellent edge support.
If you choose the Pillow-Top EOS, the encasement has an additional top pocket into which you slide the extra comfort layer.
Sizes Queen and up have split layers, meaning you can customize both sides. The split design also makes it easier to move the layers into place.
If you’re vegan or have a wool allergy, Naturepedic offers the EOS without wool (with extra cotton batting). You can also choose a latex-free version of the EOS, made with the same pocket coil layer plus an additional 3-inch pocket coil unit on top. Currently, you can only choose the latex-free version in plush, medium, cushion-firm, and firm.
Why we love the Naturepedic EOS
Naturepedic has a team of Amish craftspeople that makes the EOS in Ohio in a GOTS-certified factory under fair labor conditions. The factory is GOTS and Greenguard Gold certified and the EOS comes with a 25-year warranty with free mattress repair or replacement in the first 10 years..
The overall design of the EOS makes for a very breathable, comfortable mattress. Thanks to the depth of support and overall customization, the EOS is a top choice of eco-friendly, organic mattress for pretty much everyone, regardless of sleep-style, body shape, or weight.
We also love that Naturepedic ships the EOS for free and offers white glove delivery and mattress removal (for an additional fee).
What we don’t love
The EOS ships in a staggering amount of single-use plastic. This is fairly common for the mattress industry but the EOS seems overly wrapped. We’d love to see Naturepedic extend its sustainability approach to cover packaging, perhaps taking a leaf out of Avocado’s books and switching some of that plastic for paper wrap.

The PlushBeds Luxury Bliss is a ready-made organic latex and pocket coil mattress available in medium-firm and medium. Couples can configure both sides to meet individual sleep needs, and the mattress comes with a Lifetime Warranty!
What’s in it?
The 12-inch Luxury Bliss is a hybrid mattress, comprising:
- 1-inch GOTS certified organic cotton cover
- GOTS wool quilted layer
- 3-inch Talalay latex
- 8-inch fabric-encased coil core
- GOTS wool
- 1-inch GOTS certified organic cotton cover.
PlushBeds uses 1,057 coils in the Queen-size Luxury Bliss, all in individual fabric wraps for inch-by-inch support and reduced motion transfer. There are more coils, at a larger gauge, at the edge for full perimeter support.
Why we love the Luxury Bliss
The Luxury Bliss offers a breathable, moisture-wicking sleep surface that helps you regulate your temperature. It has excellent customizability for sleep partners whose needs differ, and it works well for most sleep positions and body types.
The Luxury Bliss is available in medium and medium-firm, with dual firmness options. These rate 8/10 and 5.5/10 for firmness, respectively.
For older adult and anyone who wants a ready-assembled mattress they don’t have to put together at home, the Luxury Bliss is a top choice. It’s also lighter than the Botanical Bliss and has up to six handles, making it easier to move.
What we don’t love
The Luxury Bliss comes ready-made, meaning you can’t reconfigure the mattress if your sleep needs change. It’s also a bit pricier than the fairly similar Avocado Green, though more customizable overall.

- Low coil count may mean more motion transfer than Avocado Green
- Can’t be flipped over
- Shorter warranty than the Avocado Green
Avocado’s Eco Organic mattress is a great budget option well suited to lighter adults, teens, and children. It is made to order in Avocado’s GOTS factory in the U.S. and is Made Safe certified non-toxic.
One member of the Leaf Score team has been sleeping on the Eco Organic for more than a year and loves it!
Unlike the Avocado Green mattress, the Eco Organic doesn’t have the extra base layer of latex, meaning you definitely can’t flip it to use the other side for sleeping. The Eco Organic also has a different coil unit, with fewer coils and less zoning. Still, Avocado uses 14.5-gauge upcycled steel coils at the edge for full perimeter support. In the photos below, we compare cross-section photos of the Eco Organic vs. Avocado Green.
What’s in it?
The Eco Organic hybrid mattress-in-a-box comprises:
- GOTS organic cotton cover
- GOTS certified wool batting (natural flame retardant)
- 2-inch layer of GOLS certified organic Dunlop latex (D65 / 14-19 ILD)
- 8-inch double-tempered, recycled steel coil unit
- Organic wool batting
- Organic cotton canvas bottom cover.
Why we love the Eco Organic
It may be a budget option but the Eco Organic is impressively built for comfort and support. It rates 5/10 (medium) for firmness, making it softer than the Avocado Green and Luxury Bliss, making it a great choice for lighter adults, including some side-sleepers.
The Eco Organic is very breathable and helps hot sleepers keep their cool. It also helps to wick away moisture for a non-sweaty sleep. If you’re wary of home set-up mattresses and super heavy latex mattresses, you’ll love how light the Eco Organic is, and the two robustly stitched handles on each side.
What we don’t love
Because it’s a shallower mattress overall, the Eco Organic is liable to bottom out if you’re a heavier adult, especially tall, or very hip or shoulder heavy. It’s also not typically firm enough for stomach-sleepers and may suffer from a bit more motion transfer compared to mattresses with more coils.
The Eco Organic also comes with just a 10-year warranty instead of the 25-year warranty with the Green. This suggests Avocado expects this mattress to reach end of life faster, meaning it may not be a budget buy longer-term.
Happsy Organic Mattress

- Depth: 10-inch

- 20-year limited warranty
- Made in the U.S. by a sustainable company
- Available up to Cali King size
- Fully detachable pillow-top available
- No zoned support, so best for adults with no back pain
- No handles on the sides
- Can’t customize comfort level
- Less transparency on materials and construction (but owned by Naturepedic, who we trust!)
- Polypropylene wrapped coils (zero-VOC certified)
Happsy is the brainchild of one of our favorite mattress companies, Naturepedic. This budget mattress-in-a-box is astonishingly well made and carries more eco-certifications than most mattresses costing twice as much!
The one downside is that the Happsy comes in one firmness and can’t be customized. It’s quite firm, 10-inches deep, and best for younger adults without back issues and who sleep on their stomach or back. Some average-weight side-sleepers may also like the Happsy, but it’s not deep enough for larger adults and is too firm for most lighter adults. Adding the pillow-top can help though!
What’s in it?
A Happsy mattress has a 10-inch profile and comprises:
- GOTS organic cotton cover (with metal zipper)
- GOTS organic wool flame barrier
- GOLS organic Dunlop latex layer (1-2 inches)
- 8-inch pocket coil layer
- GOTS organic cotton batting and bottom cover.
It’s not clear what firmness of Dunlop Happsy uses, and we’re estimating the latex thickness as there’s much less transparency about the mattress design than we see with other mattress companies. Typically, we’d dock a leaf for that, but Happsy is so well credentialed and backed by Naturepedic that we feel good about our five leaf rating.
With some digging, we found that Happsy uses synthetic fabric (polypropylene) to wrap its coils and then heat-seals these. The fabric is zero-VOC certified by GreenGuard Gold and meets GOTS and Made Safe requirements
Why we love the Happsy
Despite it’s impressive budget price, the Happsy mattress is one of very few products to carry Made Safe non-toxic certification. It is free of glues or adhesives, poly-foam, synthetic latex, and fire-retardant chemicals.
Thanks to that pocket coil layer, the Happsy is really breathable and airy, making for a lighter mattress that works well for folks who sleep hot.
The Happsy mattress is a great choice if you love a firmer mattress. It rates medium-firm (6/10) and is best suited to stomach-sleepers and some back-sleepers. Lighter adults may find it too hard and heavier adults may sink in too much and feel the coils under the thinner latex layer. You can add the Happsy Topper for more cushioning though, and the Happsy is fully refundable with a 120-night sleep trial.
What we don’t love
There’s no scope to customize the Happsy mattress and it isn’t zoned, which is great for keeping the price low but means this mattress won’t work for everyone. If you tend to need targeted hip and shoulder support in your mattress, skip the Happsy and go for the Avocado Green, Obasan, or Luxury Bliss instead.

The Serenity Spring is Savvy Rest’s signature hybrid mattress and is the most customizable coil and latex mattress we’ve found. With a 12-inch build, this super supportive and comfortable mattress is ideal for sleepers of all shapes, sizes, and sleep preferences.
What’s in the Serenity Spring?
Savvy Rest’s Serenity Spring is a latex and coil hybrid mattress comprising:
- GOTS certified organic cotton cover
- GOTS certified organic wool batting, quilted to prevent bunching
- 3-inch layer of c2c Talalay or GOLS Dunlop latex in soft, medium, or firm, customizable on both sides
- 8-inch pocket coil layer, customizable in firm or plush and on both sides.
The recycled steel coil unit is made in-house, with each coil wrapped in PLA (a plant-derived polymer), then heat-sealed together for stability.
Why we love the Serenity Spring
Unlike any other hybrid mattress on the market, the Serenity Spring allows you to choose the firmness of both the coil unit and top latex layer. And, like our top pick, you can keep reconfiguring this mattress even years after initial purchase. That makes the Serenity Spring a super sustainable, flexible choice.
Savvy Rest is employee-owned and is a Benefit Corporation that offsets its emissions through the Carbon Fund.
What we don’t love
The major downside with Savvy Rest is the lack of a company return policy. The Serenity Spring also lacks handles, which is common for home-assembly mattresses but still very irksome.
See why the Savvy Rest Serenity Spring makes our Best Of lists for side-sleepers, back-sleepers, stomach-sleepers, couples, heavier adults, and lighter adults.

We highly recommend that if you’re a larger or heavier adult, or an average-weight side-sleeper, you choose the 13-inch model. This provides the needed depth and underlying support for your spine.
Why we love the Obasan mattress
Obasan lets you customize both sides of its all-latex mattresses, including zoning in the middle layer for additional hip and shoulder support. Even our top choice, the Botanical Bliss, doesn’t offer that level of customization. You can also reconfigure an Obasan mattress as needed, even years later, should your sleep needs (or partner) change.
The Obasan factory is carbon-neutral and carries GOTS certification. Obasan makes all mattresses by hand and to order. The company also takes the guess work out of choosing a mattress by offering an automated design tool on its website. Plug in your height, weight, sleep-style and body type (and the same for your sleep partner) and, within seconds, Obasan will design a mattress to meet your needs.
What we don’t love
Obasan offers a luxury experience and luxury product. The downside is that this doesn’t come for free. Expect to pay more upfront for a fully customized Obasan mattress, but know that this can save you money in the long-run, especially as you can reconfigure the Obasan if sleep needs change years later.
Obasan also doesn’t offer refunds on these custom-made mattresses. The mattresses also require home-assembly and don’t have handles.

The Savvy Rest Serenity is another all-latex mattress you assemble at home. The 10-inch build is best for lighter to average weight adults and is made in the U.S. in a GOTS factory. Savvy Rest offers the Serenity in a wide range of sizes, including dual firmness split sizes. You can even get the Serenity in custom dimensions and shapes!
What’s in it?
The Savvy Rest Serenity is an all-latex mattress, comprising:
- Organic cotton casing with brass zipper
- Organic wool batting (quilted to prevent bunching)
- Three 3-inch layers of natural latex (Dunlop or Talalay) in soft, medium, and firm.
What we love about the Serenity
The Savvy Rest Serenity looks quite similar to the Botanical Bliss and other all-latex builds, at least at first. Upon closer look, you’ll see that this mattress offers twice the customization. This is because you can choose the firmness of three layers and choose between Dunlop and Talalay for each layer.
Given the scope for building your own mattress, the Serenity is a great choice for a wide range of sleep styles, though we wouldn’t recommend this 10-inch design for much heavier side-sleepers.
Savvy Rest is a B Corp, employee-owned, and operates a charitable program donating new pillows to domestic violence shelters across the U.S.
What we don’t love
We wish Savvy Rest had a more generous refund policy. As it stands, unless there’s a manufacturing defect, you can’t return it for a refund. You can make use of the 90-day Latex Exchange, though, albeit with an upgrade fee if you choose new Talalay layers to replace Dunlop.
