Although they don’t offer this explicitly online, they can also make a GOLS certified Dunlop latex mattress topper at your request. To get one of these, you need to place an online order and then contact the company to customize with GOLS Dunlop. I was assured by a company representative that the cost is the same as for the Talalay models, and they do have latex mattress toppers listed on their current GOLS certification.

These mattress toppers are available in Twin, Twing XL, Full, Queen, King, and Cali King and in Soft, Medium, Med-Firm, and Extra-Firm. The king and Cal king sizes have a seam down the middle due to the way they’re made, but this should not affect the soundness of the structure.

You can also add an organic cotton cover to these mattress toppers. So, if you go for the GOLS Dunlop option, this can be a fully organic mattress topper.

The Talalay model has an open-cell airflow design that makes the topper more breathable and helps you stay cool and comfortable. The Dunlop model, presumably, would be a smoother, not open-cell design, given the relative firmness and different kind of processing involved for this organic latex.

These mattress toppers are also a good choice for vegans or anyone with a wool allergy as they are made purely with latex and cotton if you choose the cover.

As a reminder, the GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certification ensures that latex is natural, non-toxic, eco-friendly, and free from dangerous chemicals. It also incorporates labor rights and helps make sure that workers are treated fairly at every stage in a product’s creation, from latex harvesting to finishing touches at the factory.

Savvy Rest offers four types of mattress toppers, two that are GOTS-certified organic toppers made with latex and two that are filled with wool (one GOTS certified, one not).

The Harmony is one 3-inch layer of natural latex encased in organic cotton, and is Greenguard Gold certified. You can customize this mattress topper, choosing Soft Talalay to create the most popular Harmony option or choosing Soft Dunlop for more support. Medium or Firm latex is also available. The total height is four inches, and it is GOTS certified organic.

The Vitality is one 3-inch layer of Soft natural Talalay latex in a certified organic cotton knit casing. This mattress topper is made exclusively with Cradle to Cradle GOLD and FSC-certified Talalay latex and offers an easy way to add extra cushioning and pressure relief. It is non-customizable, however, and is ineligible for the 90-day latex exchange.

The Natural Savvy Woolsy (only ⅗ leaves) has three inches of domestically-sourced, natural wool encased in organic cotton. For a fully organic version, though, choose the Organic Savvy Woolsy, which is made with certified organic wool and cotton.

All of the toppers are manufactured in a GOTS-certified facility and ship directly, normally within 7 days. As with Rawganique, Savvy Rest have a no-returns policy based on their chemical-free approach. The Harmony topper is, however, eligible for their 90-day Latex Exchange.

This means their mattress toppers have been tested and found to satisfy strict criteria for emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, and phthalates.

The wool and cotton sewing thread used in the stitching and embroidery on an Avocado Green Mattress Toppers are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Certified for environmental compliance in production. 

The Avocado Vegan Mattress Toppers are certified by Vegan Action and PETA and feature GOLS organic certified latex and an internally quilted ticking made with GOTS organic certified cotton, plus reinforced seams. Available in Plush (D65 Soft) and Firm (D75 Medium Firm) latex, these are exactly the same as the Avocado Green Mattress Topper, but use cotton instead of wool.

Avocado favor Dunlop latex in their products because it requires less processing than Talalay latex (which means it’s a dash more eco-friendly). They also make their own GOLS organic certified latex from their co-owned farmer’s societies in India, operating under the USDA’s National Organic Program. Dunlop latex is naturally antimicrobial, cooler than memory foam, requires no adhesives to seam it together, and is more durable than Talalay latex. 

The plush mattress topper has one seamless layer of soft Dunlop latex. The firm mattress topper has medium-firm Dunlop latex. They don’t use blended or synthetic latex or any chemical adhesives, meaning there are no seams to break down over time and ruin your mattress topper. The latex is also eco-INSTITUT certified.

Avocado never use polyurethane, toxic fire retardants, pesticides or other risky chemicals and they makes mattresses to order by hand in California, paying their workers a fair and living wage. Their factory itself is GOTS certified and accredited ISO 9001 for quality management. The company is also a B Corp and Climate Neutral, meaning that they voluntarily offset more than 100% of their emissions, from resource extraction to shipping, by supporting carbon offset projects through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation.

Holy Lamb Organics Mattress Topper

The Holy Lamb Fleece Wool Topper is a dreamy-soft lambswool fleece woven into a smooth organic cotton backing. The wool fibers stand about 1 inch high and this topper is ideal for anyone prone to bed sores or who spends a lot of time in bed. It is breathable, comfortable, and helps regulate body temperature.

The wool topper is made using Premium Eco-Wool™ sourced from sustainable west coast sheep farms in the US. It is a far better alternative to traditional sheepskin which is often doused in unpleasant chemicals that can make the hide feel stiff and heavy, with some serious off-gassing.

This fleece topper provides cozy warmth in winter and helps keep sleepers cool in summer. It comes in bassinet and stroller sizes all the way up to a Cali King size. There are also travel mat and massage table options, making this a great choice for camping, yoga, and more. The queen and king sizes are created by hand stitching two pieces of fleece together; the seam line is on the reverse side and not noticeable on the fleece side.

Holy Lamb Organics ship these fleeces in sturdy cardboard boxes with paper tape. There’s no plastic wrap or synthetic wrapping materials, but you can request your fleece be placed inside a biodegradable bag before boxing.

This fleece mattress topper will naturally ‘felt’ over the first 6-8 months of use, which means it might start looking a bit matted. Spot clean and air out in the sun to refresh the fleece during this time. After the break-in period, you can wash the fleece on a cold water, soak and spin cycle (non-agitating) and can add live cultured enzymes (try Bac-Out by Biokleen) during soak if it is stained. To dry, drape the fleece in the sun or in another warm place to dry. Do not wring out or machine dry.

Bear in mind that this is a sheep’s fleece, meaning that while it is cleaned using natural methods and no harsh chemicals, it will have a mild scent. The wool retains some of the naturally occurring lanolin oil, which helps condition the fibers and keep them fluffy and soft. This could irritate skin in some people, but the scent typically dissipates in a few days and you can use an organic cotton sheet on top of the topper if concerned.

Soaring Heart is one of my favorite mattress companies and offer a range of mattress toppers made with organic wool, latex, and cotton. Soaring Heart is a great choice for mattresses and toppers because they have a ‘Revitalization’ program. Natural fibers can pack down over the years, losing a little bounce, so the company offers the option of adding a few new layers of cotton or wool, rather than replacing an entire mattress topper, mattress, futon, or shikibuton. What’s more, they offer this at cost! Meaning you only pay for raw materials and labor, with no ‘cushion’ on top. This program saves you money and saves perfectly good mattress toppers and mattresses from landfill.

The Organic Wool Mattress Topper is available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and Cali king from $799. It features two inches of certified organic wool batting, a blend of eight breeds of sheep’s wool, layered and then hand-tufted inside of an organic cotton sateen case. The organic wool is selected from sheep farms in New Zealand, and the organic cotton is 100% organically grown in the cotton fields of Texas. 

The Deluxe Organic Wool Mattress Topper is available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and Cali king from $949. This one boasts twice the amount of wool than the Organic Wool Mattress Topper and is ideal if you are a side sleeper or have joint and muscle pain as it helps ease strain on pressure points.

The Soaring Heart Organic Latex Mattress Topper starts at $949.00 and consists of 2 inches of 100% organic, synthetic-free Dunlop latex wrapped in an inch of premium organic wool and hand-tufted to ensure long-lasting comfort.

The Royale Organic Latex & Wool Topper starts from $1,049.00 and is the most luxurious topper from Soaring Heart. It boasts 2 inches of Dunlop latex sandwiched between 4 inches of organic wool (2 inches top and bottom).  The Royale is flip-able, hand-tufted, and certified organic.

Finally, the Wave Natural Rubber Pillow Top (3″) starts from $895.00 and is made with 3 inches of GOLS certified organic natural rubber latex encased in certified organic cotton knit fabric. The sculpted surface provides comfort for sleepers with pressure-point issues but has more firmness than a wool topper.

Handmade in Seattle, Soaring Heart mattresses are 100% organic and chemical-free and the company doesn’t use chemical-based foam or synthetic fire retardants in any of their products. Soaring Heart has been making mattresses for more than 35 years and offer a 20-year warranty on manufacturing defects and a 30-day comfort guarantee, as well as free shipping in the US. Their logistics and delivery team is constantly on the lookout for new ways to recycle old mattresses and package new products in an environmentally friendly way, and to reduce the company’s carbon footprint in other ways.

Soaring Heart partner with Spring Back Recycling, for instance. This non-profit organization creates employment opportunities for disenfranchised men and is a sustainable business redefining recycling. The non-profit has been in operation since 2010, incorporated in 2012, and has expanded to other communities in the US as the first and only social enterprise to fully recycle mattresses.

The company is also socially engaged, with quarterly Charity Pillow Builds on behalf of Children’s Hospital, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and homeless shelters, such as Seattle’s Plymouth Housing Group. Their goal is to direct 1% of annual gross sales to charitable causes.

Coyuchi Mattress Topper

Coyuchi are another of my favorite companies at Leaf Score. Makers of sheets, pillows, baby clothes and toys, they also make fantastic mattress toppers using wool and GOTS certified organic cotton. Available in Twin, Queen, and King, these toppers are a little more affordable than Avocado’s but are still made in the US with wool ethically sourced in northern California from a ranch in Bodega Bay, just 12 miles from Coyuchi’s birthplace.

The wool is sent to a historic Michigan woolen mill where it is “washed with biodegradable soap and rinsed with water from nearby Lake Huron. After air drying, the wool is then transferred to the mill’s original antique carding machines, which use steam and humidity in place of chemicals to finish the topper.” The wool is hand-knotted in 9-inch squares to hold it in place and prevent clumping and is encased in 100% GOTS certified organic cotton

This mattress topper is resilient and keeps its shape, instead of molding to your body like synthetic memory foam. It is meant to be used directly on top of the mattress, underneath the mattress cover and mattress pad, not directly under your sheet. Straps go around each corner of your mattress to keep the topper in place.

Coyuchi are also members of 1% for the Planet and have been in business for more than 20 years, with a commitment to producing goods using a zero-waste water recycling method and sustainable practices. The company requires that their supply chain partners are fully compliant with the strictest environmental and social regulations, including REACH chemical standards and strict adherence to the Restricted Substances List (RSL) of the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA). They have Fair Trade certification and many products also carry the MADE SAFE® seal, which means that a product is made with safe ingredients not known or suspected to harm human health, animals or ecosystems.

Coyuchi are also involved in the Fibershed program which “develops regional and regenerative fiber systems on behalf of independent working producers, by expanding opportunities to implement carbon farming, forming catalytic foundations to rebuild regional manufacturing, and through connecting end-users to farms and ranches through public education”.

The Coyuchi mattress topper comes in a reusable, organic cloth bag and can be machine washed on the wool cycle with cold water and mild liquid detergent; do not bleach. The topper should be air-dried flat, with no wringing or twisting. Do not tumble dry. If storing, keep the wool mattress topper in a tightly sealed bin or heavy plastic bag to protect against pests; add cedar chips for extra protection.

The Birch mattress topper is GOTS and GREENGUARD Gold Certified, is handmade, ships for free within 10 days, and comes with a 100 Night Sleep Trial and 10-Year Warranty. The company uses Talalay latex that is OEKO-TEX certified and domestically made and only use organic wool that’s sourced ethically and sustainably. The wool can be traced back to individual farms in New Zealand and each farm is compliant with the PGC Wrightson Wool Integrity Program which mandates farming practices for free range, pasture fed sheep.

Birch actively scrutinize their supply chain and try to source materials from ethical partners with fair working conditions. They also try to offset their carbon footprint and donate 1% of sales to the National Forest Foundation and 1% for the Planet. Their latex mattress is also Rainforest Alliance Certified™.

In 2018, Avocado Mattress completed a merger with Brentwood Home®, a company that has been making luxury, non-toxic mattresses in California since 1987. The new corporate entity is called Avocado Green Brands™ and includes allied brands that share a focus on sustainability and socially conscious lifestyles. As such, both Avocado and Brentwood Home continue to offer distinct products, albeit with overlaps in terms of quality and adherence to social and environmental standards. That said, Brentwood Home continue to offer some memory foam type products and other products made with not-so-eco-friendly materials.

Brentwood Home offer two mattress toppers made with natural latex, including the Cedar Natural Luxe Topper (starting at $499). This has a 2-inch layer of GOLS organic certified latex, GOTS organic certified wool, and a GOTS organic certified cotton cover. The Dunlop latex is processed in a facility the company co-owns, and it is tapped from trees that are FSC® certified. The wool and cotton are sustainably sourced from collectives in India and the handmade in California mattress topper has four convenient, hand-stitched handles.

The Cedar Natural Latex Mattress Topper (starting at $269) isn’t as certified, but has an organic cotton cover quilted with sustainable wool from India and a 2-inch latex layer available in a medium feel. This is made with eco-INSTITUT® certified natural ventilated latex made by Dunlop process and has a density of 4.0lb/ft3.

These mattress toppers come with a 1-year sleep trial, free shipping and returns, and a 10-year warranty and are made in California. Brentwood Home donates to organizations including the National Forest Foundation to support environmental causes.

Rawganique offer a variety of eco-friendly mattress toppers that can be shipped for free in the contiguous U.S. These organic mattress toppers offer extra cushioning (ideal for petite sleepers or if you have back problems) and help prevent moisture from reaching the inside of the mattress itself.

Rawganique was founded more than 20 years ago by off-grid homesteaders on Denman Island off the west coast of Canada. They continue to be eco-friendly and still handmake many of their products on the island as well as in the US and through artisans in Europe. The founders describe themselves as ‘chemically sensitive people’ who use only their own products because they can guarantee their purity.

Rawganique add that ‘vegan’ stamp to some of their products because they can guarantee ‘Zero animal testing. Zero animal cruelty. Zero slave labor. Zero sweatshop. We never have to test on animals because our organic products come from perfect natural fibers and can’t harm any animal or human!’

The Rawganique Louisiana organic cotton topper is handmade in the US Using US-grown USDA-certified organic cotton. It comes in a choice of two thicknesses: 1.5-2 inches and 3-4 inches. Sizes include Toddler (28×54), Twin (39×75), Twin XL (39×80), Double (54×75), Queen (60×80), and Eastern King (76×80). The topper is encased in soft and strong organic cotton twill and is chemical-free and hypoallergenic.

To keep the topper in good shape, rotate it regularly and beat and air it periodically. Spot clean with a wet brush on the casing as needed and use a zippered organic cotton barrier mattress cover to protect the organic mattress and topper.

Rawganique’s Laguna 100% Organic Cotton Topper is 3-4 inches thick, made in the US, and is completely untreated and chemical-free. This one is available in Toddler, Twin, Double, Queen, and King and is handmade from US-grown USDA-certified organic cotton.

Rawganique also offer a 100% natural latex mattress topper enclosed in 100% organic cotton casing. Handmade in the USA, this mattress topper has a thin wrapping of pure cruelty-free wool for fire retardancy and measures 3 inches. The organic cotton casing is sateen, and the natural rubber, while not GOLS certified, is a 2-inch layer of medium-firm Dunlop rubber considered a C3 class (equivalent to ~32-ILD in Talalay). The Continuous Pour Process means the latex is seamless and unlikely to break down (until you want it to!). Because rubber doesn’t compact as quickly as natural fibers, this latex topper helps stabilize and support the body and offers comfort for side sleepers and anyone with sore joints.

Rawganique’s toppers are custom-made to order and usually ship within 10-14 days. Their organic cotton mattresses and toppers are non-returnable because they guarantee purity to all customers.

The Organic Latex Topper features two inches of Dunlop latex (14-18 ILD / Density: 55) for an additional layer of comfort and pressure point relief. It is available in sizes from Twin to Cali King and comes with a 5-year warranty and a 120 Night Sleep Trial.

The mattress topper is made in a GOTS and GOLS Certified Organic Factory. If you don’t want to keep the mattress topper after your 120 nights, they’ll work with you to donate it to a local charity and then refund your money. The company also offers a discount to members of the U.S. military. Unfortunately, there’s no indication that the company has a charitable arm other than the military discount and the donation/refund program.
