As of 2026, roughly 95% of the reviews you’ll find for the flagship Avocado Green mattress are effectively obsolete. The glowing “I’ve slept on this for five years” testimonials describe the original Avocado Green—not the mattress Avocado actually sells today. So before you trust those reviews, here’s what you need to know about Avocado’s current lineup and whether it fits your budget and sleep style.
Avocado sits at the top of the organic mattress hierarchy, and for good reason. They pair best in class green certifications like Made Safe with a Made in the USA product offering that just went through a major overhaul designed to make a mattress that accommodates all sleep styles. In practical terms, this means the old Avocado Green mattress is no more. In its place is a core Avocado mattress with three firmness levels, plus two more extreme mattress options, the somewhat Spartan extra Firm, and the Epicurean Ultra Plush.

And before you get started, there are two things you should know. First, we accepted a mattress to test from Avocado so we would have first-hand knowledge of the new products. We also tour an Avocado retail store once per year and evaluate the products according to our longstanding methodology and have no problem being critical of Avocado when we believe it is warranted. Firmness for all sleep styles

Despite writing mattress reviews for years now at LeafScore and seeing the research on how back and stomach sleepers can benefit from a firmer mattress, I was always attracted to something medium firm, like the old Avocado Green. But in retrospect that seems like a mistake for my sleep style. Having slept on the firm option for a few months now, the most surprising impact has been on the health of my lower back. Choosing the correct firmness has taken strain off my back and allowed me to start running again. Sleeping on the Avocado firm is cozy and even though I don’t sink into the mattress, there hasn’t been a sacrifice in overall comfort. In fact, as I train for a 5K, the extra sleep has been helping me improve my times.
It used to be that the flagship Avocado Green was the staple, and it played to the largest audience, right down the middle with medium-firmness for all. Now things are different and they elude a standard 1-10 firmness scale like you see on a lot of blogs. Avocado is moving away from firmness metrics arguing they can’t be standardized across brands.

I went with the Firm, not the extra firm. As a runner and mostly stomach sleeper, the firm was enough for me. Be careful with old Avocado reviews written by SEO mill content farms. They churn out templated content that is designed to rank in search engines, but offer little value. In one older review we saw, a “tester” said Avocado isn’t a good choice for stomach sleepers, but now that the Avocado Green has been retired in favor of their new line, Avocado has a mattress for every sleep style.
The Delivery Process
Recommendation: In our experience, the White Glove delivery option was well worth it. The delivery took about 45 minutes inclusive of setting up a bed.
We chose the White Glove Delivery service. A team from LA came up and unboxed the mattress, plus set up our new Avocado Midcentury Modern bed in under 45 minutes. While it’s technically possible to take delivery yourself, latex mattresses are a load to move. They’re heavy and cumbersome. Seniors, singles, and sleep deprived young families may find it easier to have the Avocado team setup everything for you. As we noted in our review of the Avocado kids mattress, which we have been staff testing for two years, the mattress does come wrapped in quite a bit of plastic. The delivery team cleans it up, but it can’t be recycled, at least not in our curbside bin.
The first thing we noticed when the mattress was removed from its vacuum seal was the lack of any off gassing. You do smell the latex, but it’s not a chemical smell like you register with polyfoam deliveries from popular bed in a box online shops. For foam, the new mattress smell isn’t harmless, it’s VOC actively entering your bedroom and impacting indoor air quality. This is a big reason we trust Avocado, they are vigilant with materials and certifications. Avocado, as a 100% natural product, carries none of the VOC risk of a new polyfoam product. Anecdotally, the Avocado smelled better and cleaner than Evaya and Plushbeds.
We are so confident in Avocado’s eco street cred that we let our kids start bouncing on the new mattress immediately.
Performance
Highlight: Avocado is the Tesla of mattresses. Their entire supply chain is vertically integrated which allows for exceptional quality. Best in class edge support is indicative of an overall superior build.
After digging in on the research, it seems the reason I have found such benefit from the Firm mattress by Avocado is spinal alignment. As a stomach sleeper, having my hips and shoulders on the same plane with “neutral” alignment has been making it easier for my back to recover after long runs. I used to think it was the impact that was giving me lower back discomfort after runs. Now, I see it as a sleep issue. When I was on a mattress that was too plush, my hips were sinking below my shoulders which put undue stress and strain on my low back and hurt recovery.
The mattress has heavy duty support and is a meaningful upgrade over Evaya, which was the mattress we last used. Pulling the trigger on the firm model wasn’t easy. I tend to equate pillow tops with luxury and comfort, and was worried the firm mattress would be too austere. It’s also a new model and we were one of the first to test it. Sleeping on an unknown quantity new SKU felt like a risk at first. What if it’s like sleeping on a wood plank or on the ground? Neither turned out to be true. Instead, the firm Avocado mattress is my Goldilocks zone for firmness and I wish I’d had it years ago. Breaking up the old Avocado Green mattress into five personalized models that can be tailored to any sleep style takes an already great brand to the next level.
Another benefit for those who sleep with a partner. The taut surface and non plush support prevents an excess of motion transfer, which means my wife and I wake each other up less if we need to get up in the middle of the night to help the kids, or if we have different bed times.
The edge support, both when sitting and lying on the mattress, are excellent and the latex is genuinely cooling, you won’t overheat on this mattress. Edge support is one of the quality metrics we look at most closely because it is an indicator of how well a mattress is made. If the mattress holds up well on the edge, it is much more likely to hold up well in the middle and resist sagging which has been true of our test model. The edge support for the Avocado firm is the best we’ve seen and we have tested almost every organic mattress at this point.
As an allergy sufferer, I like that latex repels dust mites instead of accumulating them as foam does. The fabric handles on either side make it much easier to move the Avocado mattress than some competitors which means this mattress is built to stay with you for a decade or more.
The warranty offered by Avocado is a whopping 25 years and they feature a mattress recycling program.

Highlight: Not cheap but in the range of competitors.
The Queen starts at around $1,600, which is a big investment, but is also on par with most brands that use all natural safe materials (and can prove it with real certifications). If you want the certifications and peace of mind from the Avocado brand and supply chain with a lower price point, the Eco Organic is still a good option, and a better choice than Happsy in our view.
The mattress industry also runs a lot of sales, so be on the lookout for price discounts around the 4th of July and other big Holidays.
How Avocado compares to other organic beds
How does Avocado stack up against the other organic beds I’d actually recommend? Two are worth putting side by side. Avocado’s own Eco Organic is the budget door into the lineup — you keep the certifications but give up coil count, the firmness range, and the trial drops from a year to 100 nights. If price is the wall you keep hitting, that’s the trade I’d look at first. Naturepedic’s EOS plays a different game: it’s fully customizable — swap layers, even split firmness for two sleepers — which Avocado won’t do. What you give up is Avocado’s dialed-in, ready-to-sleep feel and the seven-zone coil support that had my back happy out of the box. I haven’t run Birch or Saatva’s Zenhaven through our own testing, so I won’t pretend to compare them fairly here. Of the two we’ve tested, Avocado wins on out-of-the-box comfort; Naturepedic wins if you like to tinker.
Who should skip this mattress
Who shouldn’t buy this? If your budget tops out under $1,500, keep walking — even the Firm Queen starts near $1,600, and the Plush climbs past $2,300. If you sleep hot and love the sink-in feel of memory foam, the latex-and-coil build here sleeps firmer and springier than you’ll want; this is a “sleep on top of it,” not “sink into it,” mattress. At 11 inches, the standard build can feel thin if you’re used to a tall, hotel-style bed, or you’re a heavier sleeper who wants more underneath you. And if plastic packaging is a dealbreaker, know that mine still showed up wrapped in plenty of it. For those buyers, it’s the wrong bed.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the trial?
Up to one year on the Green. You must keep it at least 30 days before requesting a return, and returns carry a $99 fee (Avocado sends a prepaid label). Shipping and any In-Home Delivery/Setup fees aren’t refundable.
Does it need a box spring or specific foundation?
No specific Avocado foundation is required, but the warranty requires a rigid or slatted base. For third-party frames, slats must be no more than 5″ apart (Queen and up), at least 2.5″ wide, with center support. Avocado’s own foundations are built to meet those specs.
How does the new Firm compare to the retired Green’s medium?
The old Green was a single medium-firm build; that feel now lives in the Medium model (3″ of latex, up to 1,379 coils). The new Firm is genuinely firmer — 2″ of latex over cocofiber pads and up to 1,337 coils — aimed at back and stomach sleepers who found the old one too soft.
Is the vegan option the same price?
No. The Vegan mattress swaps the organic wool for GOTS organic cotton and runs about $120–$150 more than the Green at Queen. It comes in Medium and Plush only — there is no vegan Firm.
What does the recycling program cover?
It’s really a donation program. Avocado says about 97.3% of eligible returned mattresses go to shelters and veteran or transitional-housing programs instead of landfill. If you get a warranty replacement, you may be asked to donate the old mattress and show proof.
Bottom Line
The bottom line for us at LeafScore is always sustainability. Our questions surrounding Avocado are not at the brand level, they are only at the corporate level with carbon offsets.
While the mattress does ship in a lot of plastic, this product is about as good as it gets for an all natural, USA made mattress that won’t offgas and that lasts forever. Avocado is a certified B corp and makes all of its mattresses in California. They carry the most important non-toxic mattress certifications and have done impressive work building a mostly sustainable supply chain.
