Looking for a nice set of organic, ethical, and comfy bed sheets? Well, we have you covered. Our top picks carry the eco-certifications you trust, and are vetted by our staff to be free of greenwashing.
We have tested many of our top picks, and the organic sheets on this list are made with cruelty-free, environmentally friendly, certified organic cotton, linen, and hemp.
Below, you’ll find our top picks for 13 of the best eco-friendly bed sheets. First, though, a quick look at why organic matters when it comes to bed sheets.
View our unique methodology, which at the end of the day is about voting with our dollars to fight climate change, here.
Why choose organic bed sheets?
If we’re lucky, we spend around eight hours a night in close contact with our bed sheets. As such, it makes sense to know what they’re made of. The materials and processes used to make your sheets can also have a big environmental impact, making this seemingly insignificant purchasing decision actually rather important.
Most bed sheets are made with conventionally grown and processed cotton, while others are made with polyester, viscose, rayon, and polyamide. Only a small percentage of bed sheets are made with natural, low-impact fibers like hemp, linen, and organic cotton.
Conventional cotton is hugely problematic as it uses vast amounts of water to grow and process and is one of the largest contributors to pesticide use worldwide. Organic cotton, ideally regenerative organic cotton, hemp and linen are much less water intensive and are grown without the use of dangerous pesticides. Hemp in particular is a fantastic crop that actually helps to regenerate soil, requiring practically no irrigation or other inputs.
In contrast, synthetic fibers are usually made using petroleum products and a slew of toxic chemicals. Even bamboo sheets are typically made using harsh chemicals to break down the hard fibers. And bamboo processing requires vast amounts of water, which often gets polluted and ends up in waterways where it can harm wildlife and nearby communities.
For truly non-toxic bed sheets, you’ll not only want to consider the fibers used but also the way these sheets are sewn, dyed, packaged, and delivered. Sadly, natural fibers tend to have a harder time holding onto chemical dyes, meaning even cotton sheets can leach toxic azo dyes and other chemicals while in use, when washed, and in landfill at end of life.
Strange bedfellows – chemicals in your bed sheets
Some sobering research published in 2014 in Sweden detailed 2,400 textile-related substances in commonly available household products such as bed sheets. Of these, 5% were considered a potential risk to the environment and 10% a potential risk to human health. That means there could be as many as 240 chemicals snuggling with you at bedtime, including azo dyes which the researchers suggest in this report can interact with skin bacteria and be absorbed by the body.
The Swedish researchers also revealed that as much as 44 tons of hazardous dyes might be released annually into wastewater in the EU alone, just from washing cotton and polyamide textiles during manufacturing.
Dyes aren’t the only chemicals of concern, though. An increasing number of bed sheets are marketed as ‘antimicrobial’, with promises that you don’t need to wash the sheets as often. While this may sound like a good thing for saving water, the reality is that these sheets are likely treated with silver, triclosan and triclocarban bioxides. And these are all released during normal washing, which may contribute to antibiotic resistance and the rise of superbugs.
The problematic chemicals in many bed sheets often make their way into household dust, which can then be breathed in by infants, children, pets, and other vulnerable family members. Remember, too, that children are also exposed to chemicals when they suck or chew on sheets, pillowcases, blankets, clothing, towels, and other textiles.
How to choose better bed sheets
The best way to choose safer, more environmentally friendly bed sheets is to look for GOTS certification or, at minimum, OEKO-TEX 100. GOTS certified sheets are made with organic fibers and safe, non-toxic processes. You’ll want to check that the sheets themselves carry the GOTS label, not just the company’s website or marketing materials. This is because GOTS only certifies products in their entirety, not just, say, the organic cotton that makes up a small amount of a product.
GOTS certified sheets are not only better for human health, they’re also better for the environment in general. It’s much easier, for instance, to repurpose, upcycle, and recycle bed sheets made with natural fibers that haven’t been treated with toxic chemicals. And if sheets do end up in landfill, organic cotton, hemp, and linen break down very quickly without risk to the environment.
In summary, while you’re considering the color, pattern, size, and cost of your next set of bed sheets, consider asking:
- What are the sheets made from?
- Are the materials recycled and/or recyclable?
- Have the sheets been treated with toxic chemicals including dyes?
- Does the manufacturing of the sheets harm humans, other animals, and/or the environment?

Sol Organics was established in 2010 with the aim of producing eco-friendly textiles using organic cotton while ensuring equality for all employees. They found an amazing factory in India that carried certifications including FLO, GOTS, Oeko Tex and Fair Trade, and they use 100% organic long-staple cotton, grown from non-GMO cottonseeds, with a commitment to better farming practices that reduce their carbon footprint, conserve and protect drinking water, and keep everyone safe from harmful chemicals.
Sol Organics are a bit of a newcomer in this category, going up against the decades of experience and strong reputations of Holy Lamb Organics, Coyuchi, and Rawganique. If you’re looking for fairly inexpensive organic cotton sheets in a variety of colors, Sol Organics are a top choice and are staff tried and tested at LeafScore!
We tested a pair of the Sol Organics Sateen Bed Sheets during a very cold winter in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where LeafScore is based. We were impressed with the softness, overall durability, and warmth. The Sol Organics sheets got softer as we washed them, and we found the sateen sheets were good enough for winter combined with a heavy wool comforter. We loved getting under the covers with the wind and snow blowing outside in the Tetons.
Looma Organic Cotton Bed Sheets
Highlights: GOTS certified organic, non-GMO, certified Fairtrade and vegan soft and luxurious cotton sheets from a company supporting sustainability and charitable initiatives.
- Sizes available: Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Split King, and Cali King

Looma are a newcomer in the bedding industry but are one to watch and one to buy! They use exclusively non-GMO, GOTS certified organic long staple cotton sourced directly from certified Fairtrade small family farms in the Himalayan basin of Northern India. The farmers are paid a fair price, use natural methods of pest and weed control (with no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides), cultivate land by hand and use rainwater to irrigate the fields. This all means a healthier crop, greater biodiversity, and 1,526,674 days of drinking water saved, according to Looma. The company claims that this cotton requires 90% less water to cultivate, creates 50% less CO2 in production, and is fully hypoallergenic, with all farmers certified 100% Organic by GOTS.
Because the cotton is sourced using direct trade, 75,311 miles of driving emissions are avoided, and the company is assured that there is no child labor or unsafe factory conditions involved in the production of their sheets. Fairtrade certification also means that extra payments to farmers enable community development projects like building schools, health clinics, roads or investments in technology, all decided by the farmers, according to the needs of the community.
Looma also boasts supporting 702,479 square feet of pesticide free land, and 18,025,270 hours of LED bulb energy saved. These sheets are also certified vegan by PETA, with no animal testing or animal products, and just plant-based, non-toxic dyes. Looma also extend their sustainable and charitable efforts to support the education of girls – one of the mainstays of the global sustainability effort. For every foundation set sold, Looma sponsors one month of tuition for a student at the Hanuman Girls’ School in rural Rajasthan, India. So far, that translates to 5,332 girls sponsored and sent to school.
As for the sheets themselves, Looma offers a bed sheet set comprising one fitted sheet, one flat sheet, and two pillowcases. The fitted sheets have an 18-inch pocket depth and are available from twin XL to California King and split king. Looma also offer a duvet set, comprising one duvet cover and two pillow shams.
Looma cotton is unique, with extremely long and strong fibers that are also wispy, making for a weave that is softer, smoother, and more durable than conventional cotton sheets. The sheets continue to soften with each wash, but are strong enough to not pill. These sheets have a traditional Sateen weave, allowing greater breathability and temperature regulation. So, Looma sheets are a great choice for keeping you cool in the summer and cozy in the winter.

Rawganique’s organic hemp sheets include pillowcases, shams, fitted sheets, flat sheets, and duvet covers. These sheets are incredibly rare, with Rawganique the only manufacturer I’ve found making genuine, eco-friendly hemp bed sheets.
Rawganique grow, weave, and sew organic hemp sheets in-house, meaning they know for a fact that they are non-toxic. Hemp sheets feel and look very similar to linen with a textured, lush, cozy feel. Like with linen sheets, it’s a good idea to buy a hemp pillowcase and go from there.
If you’re looking for a little color, try the Hemp Chambray Bed Sheets. These are made in-house at the Rawganique Atelier in Europe from organically grown European hemp and organic cotton chambray. They are available undyed, unbleached, in natural, and color-grown sage and earth brown.
Rawganique also offer handmade custom pillowcases in organic cotton, linen, and hemp, made at their Denman Island Atelier in Canada.

Options for bed sheets include a 200 thread count percale, 300, 400, 500, and 800 thread count sheets all made with organic cotton and certified GOTS. There are also organic cotton flannel sheets and even a red plaid option! All of the products are made using certified organic cotton grown in India and Turkey and dyed using non-toxic natural dyes.
Leigh has been sleeping on Whisper Organics cotton sheets for more than two years and loves the look and feel of the organic cotton 300 thread count set. She says, “These sheets are super soft and smooth, are cozy in winter and cool in summer, and I sleep much more easily knowing there are no toxic chemicals touching my skin.”
The Whisper Organics sheets have held up incredibly well over the last couple of years, with no tearing, loose threads, or any signs of wear and tear.
Leigh’s one issue with the Whisper Organics sheets is that they shrank considerably with the first wash. So much so that the pillowcases now only fit smaller sized pillows and the queen-size fitted sheet and top sheet are now better suited to a double/full sized mattress instead. Size up and you’ll probably be just fine, but if you have a deep or oversized mattress or pillows, consider a sheet set that’s prewashed and preshrunk.
Always check the individual sheets for the GOTS label, otherwise, they’re not actually GOTS certified! (And, no, I don’t iron my sheets – sorry Martha Stewart!)

You’ve perused our top picks for organic bed sheets, why not take a look at our top picks for organic mattresses and nontoxic pillows? If you’re plant based, we also have a piece that features our top picks for Vegan mattresses.
Hello, thank you for your research and this list. Do you have any recommendations for cooling or moisture wicking sheets? Thanks
Hi Zahra,
Your best bet for moisture wicking sheets that help with temperature regulation are those made with hemp or wool. Definitely avoid synthetic sheets as these will increase sweating and body temperature. It’s also worth looking at your mattress and/or the pillowtop layer. Materials such as polyurethane foam in mattresses can make for a sweaty sleep, whereas natural latex, kapok, hemp, and wool are great for temperature regulation. You can read more here: https://www.leafscore.com/eco-friendly-bed-products/the-5-best-natural-materials-for-an-eco-friendly-mattress/
Thanks for the question!
Leigh
Thank you so much for these lists! Listening to Darin Olein’s podcast with Jeff Garner made me want to do some looking into better non-toxic products. I am currently in the market for new bedding, your lists will certainly be a great starting point, as they’re incredibly informative and helpful! Very much appreciated!
Do any of these organic brands offer oversized king sheets? I have a very difficult time finding a set of sheets that actually fit my mattress. It’s mostly the fitted sheet that I have issues with, the pocket depth would need to be 18 inches or more.
Hi Sabrina,
The Looma sheets are offered in a Cali King size with an 18-inch depth.
Thanks!
Leigh
Hi there, do you know of a brand that has undyed 100% organic cotton sheets that are for full size beds under $100?
Why no organic bamboo sheets on list?
Hi Laurie,
Great question! I tend not to recommend bamboo for soft textiles as to get those tough fibers into shape for sheets, clothing, etc., it requires some rather toxic chemicals. There are naturally fermented bamboo fiber products around but these are quite expensive and rare. And while many companies do have (mostly) closed loop systems for these chemicals, the reality is that some still enter the environment at some point.
Given that there are natural alternatives to bamboo that are much more eco-friendly, I’d steer away from bamboo except for use as a hard construction material or for things like utensils and dishware, etc.
Hope that helps!
Leigh
Leigh – what a thoughtfully researched and crafted article! Are there any brand that you would recommend who sell split-head (aka flex-top) California king fitted sheets? From my chats with the customer service of the companies listed here, none of them currently offer that size.
Hi Francesca,
Sorry for the late response!
I did a quick search and found the following:
An organic option at Walmart!
