A wool comforter is a great choice for hunkering down in winter and for regulating your temperature in spring, summer, and fall too. Wool is naturally:

  • Resistant to dust mites
  • Flame retardant
  • Moisture-wicking
  • Thermoregulating.

And when processed without toxic chemicals, it’s also biodegradable and super eco-friendly. What’s not to love?!

Learn about our methodology here.

  • Made in the U.S.
  • Sateen cover for standalone use or with duvet cover
  • Made by an employee-owned B Corp

What could be better

Weight: All-season (but on the warmer side)

Certifications: GOTS, B Corp, employee-owned

Savvy Rest’s Organic Wool Duvet Insert is a top choice for an American-made wool comforter carrying a ton of eco-certifications. The wool comes from New Zealand and is certified organic and the insert is encased in a GOTS certified organic cotton sateen cover.

Each comforter contains around six pounds of organic wool for a thickness of 1.5 inches. This makes for a slightly heavier duvet ideal for year-round use, including in colder climates. Thanks to the temperature-regulating properties of wool, this duvet insert shouldn’t feel too hot or sweaty in warmer temperatures, although the sateen cover is a little less breathable than percale.

Savvy Rest makes its comforters in the U.S. in a GOTS certified facility under fair working conditions. The comforter typically ships within 7 days.

Note that Savvy Rest doesn’t accept returns on its duvets.

Why we like Savvy Rest

Savvy Rest is a Benefit Corporation (B Corp) and has been owned by its employees since 2012. Employee-owned companies tend to offer better working conditions and a superior customer service experience too, with greater investment in sustainable growth and customer satisfaction.

Savvy Rest also donates a portion of profits to American Forests, is a member of the Carbon Fund, supporting reforestation along the Mississippi River, and has a Safe Sleep Pillows Program, where it donates new pillows for women and children who arrive at domestic violence shelters across the US.

Weight: All-season (430 gsm)

Certifications: GOTS materials, GOTS facilities

Sleep & Beyond’s MyMerino Comforter boasts a whopping 430 gsm of organic merino wool. This makes for a cozy sleep all year round.

Despite the weight and warmth, however, this comforter works well for most people even in summer. This is because of wool’s natural ability to support body temperature regulation. Merino is also moisture-wicking, breathable, naturally dust mite resistant, and antimicrobial.

S&B box-stitches this comforter to keep the merino fill in place and prevent clumping.

Although not machine washable, you can spot clean this comforter and air it out in the sun to freshen things up. It comes with a sateen encasement with a 400 thread count, making this a lovely tight weave that keeps the wool in and bugs out. Use with a duvet cover to keep it clean.

Why we like Sleep & Beyond

Sleep & Beyond makes its merino comforters in Kyrgyzstan without any pesticides or hazardous chemicals. Via email, Sleep and Beyond confirmed it sources the wool from humanely managed flocks in Kyrgyzstan. There’s no mulesing allowed and the sheep have plenty of room to graze, with priority given to natural veterinary treatments rather than problematic antibiotics.

The sheep are professionally sheared once a year and the wool undergoes a five-stage washing process using only biodegradable natural soaps and no harsh chemicals. This does mean the wool smells woolly at first, but this typically dissipates within a couple of weeks.

Sleep & Beyond bedding has a 5-year warranty and is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. It is free from azo dyes and is made in ISO and Fair Trade Certified facilities powered with wind energy. It comes in eco-friendly and reusable packaging (although this might differ if buying through a third-party) and the company has a zero-waste initiative in place.

Certifications: GOTS (cotton case), B Corp, Climate Neutral Certified

Avocado offers a new take on wool duvets, favoring Peruvian alpacas instead of sheep. The alpaca roam free and are sheared once a year for their own health and happiness by careful, traditional alpaca herders. If you’re wary of wool’s ethics, this alpaca duvet insert could win you over.

Avocado’s duvet comes in two weights, one ideal for all seasons and one best suited to summer months or warmer climates. The duvet is naturally breathable, moisture-wicking, flame-resistant, and thermoregulating, which translates to better sleep.

Spot-clean only, this duvet insert is best used with a duvet cover. Hang it out in the sun once or twice a month to freshen things up and fluff it regularly to maintain loft and coziness.

Avocado is an award-winning B Corp making super sustainable products, many of which we’ve tried and tested here at Leaf Score. Pair this with Avocado’s Green Pillow (see our review) for a great night’s sleep!

PlushBeds is offering LeafScore readers $100 off their purchase using coupon code LEAF100 at checkout.

PlushBeds Natural Luxury Handmade Wool Comforter features sustainably sourced wool encased in organic cotton sateen. This comforter is lightweight but cozy, helping you stay warm year-round in more temperature climates and great paired with an extra blanket in colder weather.

The cotton cover is GOTS certified organic and the wool is sourced in the U.S. from farmers that use more humane and sustainable practices. The wool isn’t processed with any harsh chemicals or cleaning agents.

Plushbeds uses the cleanest parts of the fleece, which it washes in a gentle, biodegradable detergent to maintain the wool’s natural curly and bounce. The wool is hand-tufted to help it stay in place and the edges are carefully sewn. The organic cotton cover has a 344-thread-count, making for a silky soft feel.

It’s best to use a duvet cover with this comforter as it’s not machine washable (and is very expensive!). If necessary, you can spot clean the duvet with mild soap and a clean cloth. Air-dry only.

Because these wool comforters are handmade to order in California, they’re not returnable unless there is a manufacturing defect (30-day warranty period only, though).

PlushBeds and sustainability

PlushBeds markets this comforter as “100% Chemical and Cruelty-Free”. This is because of the company’s strict responsible wool assurance policy, using only wool from small sheep farmers in the US who act as humanely as possible towards their sheep (including not using mulesing, harmful shearing practices, or dipping).

The wool is not subject to carbonization, a conventional technique where wool is dipped in strong acids to remove debris. Instead, PlushBeds uses the cleanest parts of the fleece, cleaning this further by hand before washing it in a gentle, biodegradable detergent. The wool remains naturally soft and curly, without the need to ‘perm’ it with chemicals.

Holy Lamb Organics and non-organic wool

Holy Lamb rigorously scours its wool to remove vegetable matter and makes its products in a scent-free and chemical-free facility. This means a Holy Lamb Organics Comforter is a top choice for anyone with allergies (except to wool) or Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. The company also tests all its wool for heavy metals through fiber sample analysis at UC Davis, California Animal Health & Food Safety Laboratory.

Despite not being certified organic, the wool used in the Holy Lamb Organics Wool Comforters likely exceeds organic standards and is better quality, in addition to supporting US farmers. Holy Lamb specializes in using Premium Eco-Wool™, which it sources from small, local, sustainable farms in the Pacific Northwest. EcoWool is not certified organic, but often exceeds the requirements for organic certification. In some cases, the company uses organic (GOTS) imported wool from New Zealand.

Holy Lamb Organics All-Season Comforter is actually two comforters that make a perfect pair for colder months and can be separated for when the weather warms up. The two individual comforters are slightly lighter than HLO’s lightweight comforter and tie together with cotton corner ties.

The comforters are hand-tufted and stitched at the edges, so the layers of EcoWool stay in place and don’t clump. The case is sateen organic cotton which feels smooth and soft but is hardwearing.

Together, the two layers weigh up to 6.6 lbs. for the King size. This is still fairly light for a wool duvet.

While pricey, this all-season comforter is technically two comforters, meaning it actually works out to be affordable if you’re a hot sleeper and want a spare comforter for another room.

HLO uses sustainable, reusable packaging. If you want your comforter packaged in plastic, let them know when you place your order.

All comforters are made by hand and button-tufted to keep the wool in place. While technically machine washable, I don’t recommend trying that with this larger comforter. Final thoughts

If you’ve never slept under a wool duvet before, doing so could seriously upgrade your sleep. Wool has a lovely weight to it that’s unlike down or polyester, and it helps you regulate your temperature for better quality sleep. Whether you’re prone to sweating at night or tend to get chilly, wool is a top choice for a duvet or comforter.
