A comforter isn’t much comfort if it is made with toxic chemicals and synthetic materials that harm people and planet. Here are the best orgarawnic, non-toxic comforters and duvet inserts to upgrade your sleep space in a safe and sustainable way.

Runner-up for best organic wool duvet/comforter
As parent to a tiny toddler, I know how important a good night’s rest is for mental and physical health. And few things in life are better than curling up under a cozy comforter for a good night’s sleep.
What if your duvet is off-gassing toxic chemicals, though, or is the result of animal cruelty and child labor?
Sadly, most duvets are the stuff of environmental and ethical nightmares, filled with petroleum-based polyester or forcibly plucked feathers sterilized with formaldehyde.
The comforters below are genuinely sustainable, made by companies that care, using safe, non-toxic, and mostly certified organic materials.
Not sure how to choose a new duvet? Learn more at the following pages:
- Fill power, tog, weight, warmth, and loft
- Quilting and quality
- What to think about when choosing a new duvet
You’ll also want to think carefully about the natural materials that make up your comforter or duvet. These affect how it feels, the weight and warmth, duvet care and maintenance, and how long it is likely to last.
Here are my top picks for eco-friendly, non-toxic, safe and sustainable duvets and comforters.

We love the box-stitching on this comforter as it helps to prevent the merino from moving around and clumping together.
Sleep & Beyond makes its merino comforters without any pesticides or hazardous chemicals. Via email, Sleep and Beyond confirmed it sources the wool from humanely managed flocks in Kyrgyzstan. This means no mulesing, among other things.
The wool is cleaned using only biodegradable natural soaps and no harsh chemicals and the duvet insert comes with a 5-year warranty and is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100.
S&B makes this duvet in ISO and Fair Trade Certified facilities powered with wind energy and ships it in eco-friendly and reusable packaging.

Holy Lamb Organics offers a lot of wool comforters, but we like the All-Season Comforter for its design and overall economy. Sure, it’s pricey on the face of things, but this duvet is actually two comforters in one.
Separate out the two layers for two summer duvets or lightweight year-round duvets to pair with other blankets (or put back together with the handy ties) when winter rolls around.
HLO avoids plastic packaging and uses sustainable, reusable bags and boxes instead. If you want plastic packaging though, let the company know and it can work out something to give your duvet extra protection in transit..

Weight: Midweight

PACT’s Quilted Comforter is a dream to sleep under in summer and, now fall has rolled around, is also proving great for layering in cooler weather where I live in the Pacific Northwest. Made with certified organic cotton fill and an organic cotton sateen cover, this comforter has a relaxed, modern aesthetic that also works with a more traditional style.
The comforter is available in five colors and three sizes (I got the Ochre and it’s gorgeous!). It is machine washable with cold water and can be tumble dried on low. PACT also recommends washing the comforter before first use, for extra softness and a good fit if you’re using a duvet cover.
PACT estimates that compared to a conventional cotton comforter, their organic cotton comforter saves 466 gallons of water. The comforter is also made in a Fair Trade factory using GOTS certified organic cotton. And it’s carbon neutral too, thanks to PACT’s carbon offsets.
For packaging, PACT typically uses recyclable paper bags and card that are FSC certified and carbon neutral, with no single-use packaging. Unfortunately, this comforter ships in a plastic bag. Ask PACT for other options if you’d rather go plastic-free.
PACT also offers a Give Back Box program where you can reuse your PACT box or other cardboard box, get a free shipping label, and ship gently used clothing to charities for recirculation. You can even get a tax deduction for your donated clothing.
PACT also makes a crinkle comforter using organic cotton. However, the crinkle design appears to be less robust than the quilted option and isn’t machine washable.
PACT offers a 60-Day return policy, no questions asked.
I absolutely love my PACT organic cotton comforter. It is a beautiful rust-orange color, incredibly smooth and soft, drapes beautifully, and feels fantastic. It has a lovely weight for summer use over a flat sheet and is great for layering under an extra blanket for breathable bedding with extra coziness now fall has set in.
My PACT comforter arrived in a simple cardboard box with other PACT bedding. While the bedding was all in recyclable paper packaging, the comforter was protected by a large plastic bag, unfortunately.
The only other criticism I have of the comforter is that the Queen size is huge. If you have a taller bed and mattress set-up, this likely won’t be an issue for you. For us, our lower bed and mattress means there’s considerable overhang at the bottom corners of the bed. And that makes for a tripping hazard and more frequent laundering unfortunately. Something to bear in mind; if your bed is low like ours, consider sizing down.

Rawganique is a perennial favorite at Leaf Score and offers a fantastic handmade organic cotton comforter that is perfectly suited for year-round use. It’s a little pricier than Coyuchi’s comforter but it is made in the U.S. from U.S.-grown cotton, making it more sustainable and eco-friendly.
That said, Rawganique doesn’t carry a GOTS or Made Safe certification for this comforter, unlike Coyuchi. There’s only organic cotton here, though. This includes the organic cotton cover, wadding, and the thread used to sew it together.
The fill is a single layer of hand-carded organic cotton batting quilted to a soft, smooth, organic cotton fabric casing. It is warm, cozy, and breathable and easy to pair with a blanket for especially cold nights.
Rawganique deliberately makes its Organic Cotton Comforter to fit snugly in a duvet cover. This helps prevent it from moving around and bunching and gives it more loft overall. Unfortunately, you can’t wash this organic cotton duvet in a machine. Instead, you’ll want to air out your duvet for a few hours every month or so.
Rawganique tries to ship plastic-free but also knows that some folks with MCS prefer sealed plastic packaging. For packaging requests, contact Rawganique when making your order.
Rawganique is one of the few companies we recommend at Leaf Score that doesn’t carry formally recognized certifications for its products. While certifications are helpful, we appreciate Rawganique’s consistently ethical stance on fair working conditions, material sourcing, and non-toxic manufacturing practices.
Rawganique is well known for making exceptionally high quality products without any hazardous chemicals. This means your duvet or comforter won’t expose you to pesticides, PVC, BPA, formaldehyde, dioxins, or heavy metals. The company’s products are also often vegan, are not tested on animals, and are free of GMOs.
Coyuchi Organic Diamond Stitch Cotton Comforter

- MadeSafe, GOTS, and Fair Trade certifications
- Diamond-stitching and 1/2-inch binding for durability
- Four color options
- Machine washable

Coyuchi’s Diamond-Stitched Organic Cotton Comforter is a fantastic sustainable, eco-friendly, non-toxic duvet. Coyuchi makes the comforter in India using 100% GOTS certified organic cotton. The comforter is available in alpine white, undyed, steel blue, and ginger, and in three sizes: Twin, Full/Queen, and King size.
This comforter features 360 GSM organic cotton batting for year-round use. The comforter is encased in Coyuchi’s signature Crinkled Percale fabric and has a half-inch binding all around, keeping the comforter tidy but with a relaxed drape. We love that it has corner loops to anchor to a duvet cover, but it also works well as a stand-alone comforter.
Coyuchi sends the comforter plastic-free in a reusable organic cotton bag. The organic cotton is grown and woven in India and is GOTS and Fair Trade Certified. Coyuchi is also a 1% for the Planet member.
This comforter is a breeze to keep clean and care for.
You can wash this comforter in the machine, assuming the drum is big enough. You can also dry it on low. Because the colors are solid, the comforter is also reversible. It’s also easy to spot clean with a little water and mild soap as needed.
Coyuchi offers a 1-year warranty on this comforter for manufacturing defects.
The Best Bamboo Linen Comforters

ettitude takes the idea of linen and spins it on its head with this coverlet made with 70% lyocell bamboo and 30% hemp fibers. The blend makes for a soft, durable, machine washable, less wrinkly look and feel.
The coverlet, AKA a comforter, has a weight of 250 GSM, making it suitable for summer and warmer spring and fall nights. You’ll want to layer it with a blanket or other bedding for winter, if you live somewhere cold, or if you like things really cozy.
Hemp and bamboo are naturally both antimicrobial, though you’ll still want to wash this comforter on occasion. Thankfully, the comforter can handle washing in a machine with cold water on a gentle setting. Tumble dry the comforter on low or line dry.
The comforter comes pre-washed in a reusable drawstring bag for convenient storage. ettitude makes the bag from its fabric scraps as part of its goal of being zero-waste.
This comforter is made with CleanBamboo, which ettitude sources from FSC-certified sustainable forests. The lyocell bamboo fiber is made in a non-toxic, closed-loop system that recycles 98% of water. This makes for less water use overall, less water pollution, and lower carbon emissions compared to conventional cotton textiles.
ettitude also supports charitable water projects to ensure drinking water for impoverished communities, and it works with Canopy to keep its packaging and products sustainable.
How we chose our top picks for eco-friendly duvets
As far as possible, the products we recommend at Leaf Score are those we’ve tried and tested ourselves. These products make the cut because they’re safe and sustainable and comprise natural materials that we actually want in our homes for our own families.
We also favor companies that show a commitment to environmentally friendly manufacturing practices, charitable enterprise, and a triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit.
To help us identify which companies are doing things better, we look for duvets that carry credible green certifications. We also look for companies that:
- Are Benefit Corporations (B Corps)
- Are Fair Trade Certified™
- Adhere to Nest standards
- Take part in other third-party certification programs
- Only sell sustainable, no-toxic products (not just a token organic duvet).
Because I’m a skeptic at heart, I always check that any certifications are valid and current. And I go beyond just checking for green certs and nerd out with sustainability reports and other company info to form a wider view of how a brand approaches eco-friendly practices.
FAQs
Cotton tends to settle and flatten over time. To fluff up your cotton duvet, put it in the dryer for twenty minutes on the coolest setting with a couple of new tennis balls.
It’s also a good idea to protect your duvet with a tightly woven organic duvet cover. Keep the duvet or comforter away from moisture too.
