What’s in the Savvy Rest Serenity?
The Savvy Rest Serenity mattress is rare in that you can choose between layers of Dunlop and Talalay latex in three different firmness for each layer. Most mattresses only offer a choice of Dunlop or Talalay, not both.

The Serenity has three layers of latex and comprises:
- Organic cotton casing with brass zipper
- Organic wool batting (quilted to prevent bunching)
- Three 3-inch layers of natural latex (Dunlop or Talalay) in soft, medium, and firm.
Savvy Rest uses GOLS certified organic Dunlop latex and Vita Talalay latex certified as Cradle to Cradle GOLD. This is a measure of the health impact, level of material re-use, water stewardship, and social fairness for the latex, which comes from rubber tree plantations that adhere to sustainable forestry practices.
Savvy Rest’s natural Dunlop latex is certified organic in two ways. First, the rubber tree plantations are certified organic according to USDA standards. Second, the processing stage is certified organic to the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). In addition, Savvy Rest use GOTS certified wool and unbleached, GOTS certified organic cotton.

The Serenity is a breathable, moisture-wicking, superbly comfortable mattress that supports thermoregulation. As Savvy Rest’s flagship natural mattress, the Serenity offers exceptional customization options, including a choice of firmness on both sides. This makes the Serenity a fantastic choice for almost everybody, including couples with wildly different sleep needs.
For most adults, Savvy Rest recommends the Serenity with layers (top to bottom) of Soft Dunlop, Medium Dunlop, and Firm Dunlop. This provides pressure-relieving comfort on top and stable support for the spine underneath. You can switch the layers for a firmer feel and this also offers an adaptable configuration for guest beds if you have guests with different needs.
Savvy Rest Serenity works for:

- Couples with different firmness needs.
Note, too, that Savvy Rest uses layers of Dunlop latex that have a firmer and softer side. Usual set-up has the softer side with the smaller holes facing up, but stomach sleepers may wish to flip the Dunlop layer to have the larger holes facing up as this has a firmer feel.
Savvy Rest only recommends using the Serenity on a rigid, slatted foundation or platform bed, not for a Murphy or adjustable bed.
With three 3-inch layers of latex, organic wool batting, and an organic cotton cover, the Serenity mattress has a 10-inch profile overall. The wool layer makes the mattress naturally fire-resistant and helps to promote a cooler, drier environment and more comfortable sleep. The Savvy Rest organic casing closes with a strong brass zipper.
If you’re a heavier side-sleeper, the Serenity may not have enough depth to prevent bottoming out.

Downsides
The main drawbacks of the Serenity are the heaviness of the mattress and layers, lack of handles, and no option to return the mattress if it doesn’t work for you.
Savvy Rest only allows returns and refunds if there’s a manufacturing defect. The company says this is to avoid them needing to use chemicals to sanitize mattresses for resale. While their avoidance of chemicals is laudable, other mattress companies donate or recycle returns, so it’s a shame Savvy Rest doesn’t offer the same policy.
If you’d rather not have wool in your mattress, you’re out of luck with Savvy Rest. Vegans and anyone with a wool allergy will want to check out Naturepedic’s all-latex EOS Trilux model or the PlushBeds Natural Bliss.
Packaging and shipping
Expect your Serenity mattress to arrive in at least three boxes, depending on size. Each layer is color coordinated and labeled for ease of assembly. Savvy Rest also offers white glove delivery and mattress set-up, which we recommend if you have the budget and are an older adult, have mobility issues, or see yourself struggling to lift and position heavy slabs of latex.
Savvy Rest’s Serenity comes with a 90-day layer exchange period, where you can switch layers for free. That said, you will need to pay an upgrade fee if you switch a Dunlop layer for Talalay, and you’ll also pay shipping both ways (to send layers back and to receive the new layers). Shipping costs are also higher for larger sizes.
Savvy Rest Serenity vs. the competition
If you’re looking for a combination of quality, cost, customization, reputation, CSR, and eco-friendly credentials in an all-latex mattress, Savvy Rest’s Serenity is a great choice. Savvy Rest’s Serenity is also available as a custom shape or size mattress, which is rare.
That said, Obasan and OMI offer all-latex mattresses with more customization options overall. You can tailor both sides, sections, and layers of these mattresses and switch layers out later as needed.
Savvy Rest’s Serenity and PlushBeds’ Botanical Bliss are very similar latex mattresses, though PlushBeds is more affordable. If you’re under 160 lb. or buying a mattress for a child, however, check out the more affordable Savvy Rest Tranquility mattress which only has two latex layers.

Yes, every Savvy Rest Serenity mattress comes with a 20 year warranty. Warranties may differ for other Savvy Rest products, however.
Savvy Rest doesn’t allow returns unless there’s a manufacturing defect. This is because the company would want to sanitize returns for resale, and it’s not willing to do that because of its chemicals policy. While laudable, this avoidance of chemicals needn’t mean no returns or refunds. Plenty of other, much smaller, mattress companies do allow returns; they just donate usable products to charity rather than reselling mattresses.
Happily, there’s a bit of wiggle-room for the Serenity. Savvy Rest does offer a 90-day Latex Exchange program, meaning you can switch a layer to reconfigure the mattress. You have to pay an upgrade fee for Talalay latex though and pay shipping both ways.
Savvy Rest’s Unity Pillowtop (View Price on Savvy Rest) has four layers, three of which are the same as in the Serenity mattress. The top layer is the Harmony latex topper, which is also customizable, allowing you to choose between three densities of Talalay or Dunlop.
The latex topper provides extra pressure relief for side-sleepers and makes the mattress 13-inches deep. The pillowtop has its own separate organic cotton encasement, which means you can add or remove it as needed.
Savvy Rest also offers innerspring mattresses, including the SerenitySpring and the Earthspring™ mattress. Both are also Greenguard GOLD certified.
The SerenitySpring is customizable, both for the top layer of latex and the underlying coil unit. This makes it one of the best choices for a hybrid latex mattress.
The Earthspring is a lower-cost 9-inch innerspring mattress made without chemical flame retardants and ideal for children or small adults. It is only available up to Queen size and has a Bonnell design innerspring unit (where the coils are interlinked). This kind of coil unit creates more motion transfer, meaning its best for solo sleepers. The Earthspring mattress also isn’t customizable and is fully assembled before delivery.
The Tranquility mattress has two 3-inch layers of either Talalay or Dunlop latex customizable to your needs. As a shallower mattress, the Tranquility is a good fit or children, bunk beds, and and petite adults under 160 lb. who like a firmer mattress. For heavier adults, the Tranquility is very likely to bottom out, which is where you can feel the bed base or slats through the mattress due to sinkage.
