Savvy Rest specializes in mattresses but lends it expertise to what is, essentially, a futon. The Pastoral is handmade to order in a GOTS-certified facility in the U.S.
What’s in it?
The Pastoral comprises GOTS certified organic wool batting in a GOTS certified organic cotton twill cover. Savvy Rest uses linen thread for the stitching and hand-tufting. (Rawganique uses nylon thread for the tufts.)
Why we love the Pastoral from Savvy Rest
The Pastoral is one of very few wool futons available and is much more breathable and lighter than a cotton futon. It weighs just 48 lb. for a Cali King (versus 185 lb. for the Zen Sleeper!). A Twin size weighs just 22 lb.
As a wool futon, the Pastoral offers excellent support for body temperature regulation and a comfortable sleep surface for a wider range of adults and children. It’s a touch softer than an all-cotton futon and can work for some average weight side-sleepers as well as stomach-sleepers and back-sleepers.
The Pastoral is considerably more affordable than options from Rawganique and The Futon Shop. It’s also available in custom sizes (by width and length, not depth or shape).
Savvy Rest is one of our favorite companies at Leaf Score for mattresses and bedding. This B Corp is owned by its staff and operates with a triple bottom line (people, planet, profit). The company predominantly uses natural and organic materials to make products that are affordable and durable.
Savvy Rest also donates a portion of profits to American Forests to support forest conservation and restoration. It is a member of the Carbon Fund, helping to support reforestation along the Mississippi River, and it donates new pillows and blankets to domestic violence shelters.
What we don’t love about Savvy Rest futons
The Pastoral is non-returnable and takes a while to ship (3-4 weeks after ordering). It’s also prone to compression, so you’ll want to follow Savvy Rest’s advice to use this futon on a bed rug over a slatted foundation, platform bed, or platform bed insert. It’s also best to rotate and flip the Pastoral regularly and to sleep on different parts of the mattress for at least the first six months to avoid serious mattress compression.
The Pastoral is only available in the 4.5-inch depth, which may provide too little support for heavier adults who sink more into a mattress. If this turns out to be the case, you could add a more traditional mattress topper either on top or below, depending on your preferred mattress firmness.
Most wool futons are only intended for occasional use, not for use every night. If you’re looking for a futon that will be in continual use, consider a cotton futon instead.
