Plushbeds eco-credentials
Plush Beds have some impressive eco-credentials and are highly certified. They are committed to providing “products you can feel good about, from start to finish” and to keeping their products “free of harmful chemicals, treating our source flocks humanely, and using sustainable land management practices”. Plush Beds even offer an annual $1,000 scholarship to a student seeking an “eco-degree”. Something to think about while you’re lounging in your comfortable new dorm bed before heading to class.
Plush Beds vs. Avocado, Naturepedic, and OMI
Plush Beds are an excellent option for a high-quality eco-friendly mattress from a company with a great reputation. Their Luxury Bliss innerspring mattress has a raft of impressive eco-credentials and starts at just $999, rising to $2,098 for a Split Kind, giving it a similar price point to the Avocado Green Mattress and making it around half the price of Naturepedic’s higher-end innerspring models. It’s also substantially more affordable than Soaring Heart, but costs more than Eco Terra’s mattress (but likely of a much higher quality and with more robust certifications) (View Price on Eco Terra).
In terms of performance, Plush Beds mattresses have a good reputation for being comfortable and durable, although their innerspring mattresses haven’t yet been tested by Consumer Reports. Avocado’s Green Mattress (View Price on Avocado) won top place for innerspring mattresses in Consumer Reports’ most recent round-up, but Avocado carry fewer eco-certifications and do not enjoy the longstanding reputation of Plush Beds.
While Plush Beds Luxury Bliss mattress has a range of excellent eco-credentials, the company itself makes some less than eco-friendly sleep products, including polyurethane mattresses. So, if you have multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) or simply want a high-quality mattress free from toxic chemicals and made with care from sustainably and humanely sourced materials, OMI are the top choice. These mattresses carry more certifications than any other mattresses on the market, have been rigorously tested and found to be durable and high-performance, and their REST collection is comparable in price to most other eco-friendly innerspring mattresses with fewer certifications.
If you’d rather not have wool in your mattress but you like Plush Beds, their Natural Bliss (all-latex) model is your best bet as this is vegan (View Price on Plush Beds). For a wool-free innerspring model, however, Avocado’s Vegan Mattress is excellent and probably your top choice, given its top place in the Consumer Reports round-up (View Price on Avocado). Naturepedic also offer an all-latex EOS Trilux model that is wool-free.
For quick reference, Plush Beds mattresses come with free shipping, free returns, a free 100-night sleep trial, free comfort exchange program and a 25-year warranty. This is similar to Avocado and My Green Mattress. And it is slightly better than OMI’s 90-day sleep trial and 20-year limited warranty, and much better than Savvy Rest who don’t allow returns at all and Soaring Heart who offer a 20-year limited warranty, a 30-day comfort trial and are rather miserly with their return policy.
In terms of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), Plush Beds have a history of donating to numerous charitable causes and have their own eco scholarship. Avocado are best of the bunch for charitable giving, however. Swiss Dream Beds and Savvy Rest also donate to charities, and Naturepedic are members of 1% for the Planet, but they don’t seem to do much else. OMI seem to focus all their energy on eco-certifications and have no defined programs for CSR, and Eco Terra make no mention of charitable giving.
All in all, OMI’s REST mattress is your best bet for a non-toxic, eco-friendly, high-quality, innerspring mattress at a great price point. If you’re looking for a slightly cheaper option from a reputable company, Plush Beds are a great choice. For an even more affordable option, choose Avocado, who win top place from Consumer Reports for innerspring mattresses. My Green Mattress or Savvy Rest’s Earthspring models (View Price on Savvy Rest) are also good choices if you can’t track down the others mentioned, and be sure to check your mattress needs against the configurations available from these companies, as your particular requirements may be better served by one than the other.
