My Green Mattress Emily Crib Mattress is one of my top choices for an eco-friendly, non-toxic crib mattress at an affordable price. The Emily is made with a quilted GOTS certified organic cotton cover over a layer of wool, with insulator pads made with GOTS certified coconut fiber mixed with GOLS certified latex over steel innersprings. It is Greenguard Gold certified, made in the US, and uses Oeko-Tex certified natural Ecowool sourced from sheep in the US. And… it’s far more affordable than many other similar quality mattresses at just $289.

- Double-sided so it can be flipped to extend mattress life (both sides have the same firmness)
|Country of Origin:||USA|
|Materials:||Certified organic cotton and wool, certified organic coconut coir and GOLS certified natural latex, steel innersprings|
This mattress contains 150 steel innersprings with a 13.5 gauge with supportive edging, making this mattress a little firmer (which is better!) than the Naturepedic 15.5 gauge coils. The coconut and latex insulator pads offer a breathable, sustainably sourced, non-toxic, durable and firm encasement for the steel springs that is naturally antibacterial and excellent for weight distribution.
Thanks to the wool layer, the Emily mattress is naturally flame retardant and requires no chemical flame retardants. It is made without polyurethane foam or other petrochemical-derived materials. This mattress is made double-sided, so you can flip it to extend mattress life (both sides have the same firmness).
The Emily crib mattress measures 27 1/4″ x 52″ x 6″ and weighs 15 lbs 6 oz, making it lighter than the Naturepedic classic cotton crib mattress but heavier than the Naturepedic lightweight mattress made with plastic.
As each mattress is made to order, you’ll get a freshly made mattress that hasn’t just been sitting around in a warehouse gathering dust and who knows what else. This does mean, however, that the mattress may have a natural wool smell at first. Airing this out for a few days will allow the earthy smell to dissipate, but the smell is not harmful and some people actually like it!
The Ecowool in the Emily mattress (and My Green Mattress’s other mattresses) comes from sheep in Northern California and Southern Oregon and is not treated with any harsh chemicals, dyes, or bleaches. The wool is free from chemical pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, and hormones, and every batch of wool is tested at the University of California Davis’ Animal Toxicology Laboratory for these chemicals an for naturally occurring heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, and antimony.
The Emily mattress was redesigned in December 2018 to feature the GOTS certified coconut coir blended with GOLS certified natural latex. This mattress was inspired by the daughter of the company’s founder as she suffered from allergies and eczema. All mattresses are made in Illinois.
Every mattress from My Green Mattress comes with a 10 year warranty and a 100 night comfort guarantee. They also offer a payment plan. If you don’t want to keep the mattress after your 100 nights, they’ll work with you to donate it to a local charity and then refund your money. The company also offers a discount to members of the U.S. military. Unfortunately, there’s no indication that the company has a charitable arm other than the military discount and the donation/refund program.
My Green Mattress vs. OMI, Savvy Rest, and Naturepedic
My Green Mattress’s Emily Crib Mattress contains 150 steel innersprings with a 13.5 gauge with supportive edging, making this mattress likely a bit firmer than the Naturepedic models which use 15.5 gauge coils. For an infant, firmness is key in a mattress.
My Green Mattress are fairly new to the eco-friendly mattress market, but their founder has a lot of mattress experience elsewhere, which gives them an edge over other newcomers. That said, OMI, Savvy Rest, and Naturepedic have been around for years, and are companies with excellent reputations who offer high-quality eco-friendly mattresses.
My Green Mattress appear to only make eco-friendly non-toxic mattresses, which makes them a company I’d favor supporting. Their crib mattress has a wealth of certifications, including GOTS, GOLS, Greenguard Gold, Oeko-Tex, and EcoWool, and all for a very good price.
If you’re looking for an eco-friendly non-toxic crib mattress with an in-built waterproof cover, Naturepedic’s mattresses are your best bet (with the exception of the non-waterproof single-sided quilted mattress). Lullaby Earth’s crib mattress (View Price on Amazon) and Nook’s Pebble Pure (which has a removable washable cover) (View Price on Amazon) are also decent options, but these both use less eco-friendly materials and aren’t as well established as Naturepedic.
For all the other mattresses I recommend at LeafScore, you’ll need to use wool puddle pads and/or a waterproof crib mattress cover or pad. The two best options I can find are Holy Lamb and Home of wool.
Wool and fire resistance
If you’d rather not have wool in your crib mattress, Naturepedic offer some of the best wool-free options and are transparent about using a mixture of baking soda, silica, and eucalyptus as a natural flame retardant instead of wool.
In contrast, OMI, Soaring Heart, Sleep Lily, and Savvy Rest all include wool in their crib mattresses. Lullaby Earth offer a decent wool-free crib mattress made with recycled polyester and polyethylene, but it’s not entirely clear how Lullaby Earth meet fire safety standards.
My Green Mattress are my top pick overall for a reasonably priced non-toxic, eco-friendly crib mattress with robust certifications and an excellent reputation. Their Emily mattress is priced at $289, while their closest competitor, arguably NaturalMat, offer a Quilted Latex Mat for $574.00. NaturalMat also offer a Quilted Coco Mat Crib Mattress retailing at $424.00, as well as a and a Quilted Mohair Mat for $497.00, made with similar standards and construction but with coconut coir and mohair for the core respectively.
I’m not convinced as to just how non-toxic and eco-friendly these NaturalMat mattresses are, however, given the lack of transparency over the materials and treatments used to make these mattresses and the fact that they are imported and therefore likely to be subjected to fumigation upon arrival in the US.
The Nook Pebble Pure Crib Mattress retails for around $395 and is made with organic coconut coir blended with natural latex foam and covered in organic wool. However, I’m not all that confident in the non-toxic, eco-credentials of this mattress either, given the lack of transparency over the cover materials including an organic cotton ‘non-toxic poly blend’.
Naturepedic’s Organic Cotton Classic and Lightweight Classic mattresses are both latex-free and similar in price to the Emily mattress, costing between $255 and $299. These both boast a waterproof cover, however, unlike My Green Mattress, where you’d have to buy separate covers or puddle pads.
If you’re going to spend over $200 on a crib mattress, I’d strongly suggest going with My Green Mattress or Naturepedic. If it’s a lightweight mattress you’re after, the Naturepedic Lightweight is arguably your best option, although the Emily only weighs 15 lbs and 6 ounces.
Non-toxic and eco-friendly credentials
My Green Mattress cover all their bases with certifications from GOLS, GOTS, Oeko-Tex, Greenguard Gold, and EcoWool, making their mattress more robustly certified than any Naturepedic mattress (which boast only Greenguard Gold, GOTS, and UL-certified formaldehyde free (GOLS doesn’t apply).
OMI crib mattresses carry more certifications than My Green Mattress, Savvy Rest, Soaring Heart, Naturepedic, and every other mattress on the market, but you pay for that peace of mind. Still, if you are concerned about multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) or simply want a high-quality crib mattress free from toxic chemicals and made with care from sustainably and humanely sourced materials, OMI are the top choice.
My Green Mattress’s Emily Crib Mattress, made with latex, coconut coir, wool, cotton, and innerspring mattress weighs just 15 lbs and 6 ounces, thanks to the coconut coir most likely. The Naturepedic crib mattresses weigh between 21 and 25 lbs for the cotton and innerspring models and just 8 lbs for their Lightweight mattress made with plastic. Nook’s Pebble Pure also weighs in at 25 lbs.
In contrast, both of the Sleep Lily crib mattresses are very heavy, weighing in at 33 and 35 lbs for the innerspring and latex mattresses respectively. No weight details are available for OMI, Soaring Heart, Lullaby Earth, or Savvy Rest unfortunately, nor for Nook or NaturalMat.
There are some size differences between these mattresses that are worth bearing in mind if you have already bought a crib. The Soaring Heart mattress, for instance, is a little bigger than Naturepedic’s mattresses and at the top end of the standard size measurements for a crib mattress (although it’s also thinner at just 3.5 inches compared to most crib mattresses measuring 5 or 6 inches. Savvy Rest’s crib mattress (View Price on Savvy Rest) is also slightly longer and wider than Naturepedic’s crib mattresses, while OMI’s mattresses are as long but a little wider. For comparison, here are the mattresses listed from largest to smallest in terms of width and length:
- Nook Pebble Pure – 28” x 53” x 4”
- Soaring Heart – 28 5/8” x 52 3/8” x 3 ½ “
- Sleep Lily – 28” x 52” x 6”
- OMI – 28” x 52” x 6”
- NaturalMat – 28” x 52” x 6”
- Savvy Baby – 27 ½” x 52” x 6
- My Green Mattress – 27 ¼ “ x 52″ x 6″
- Naturepedic – 27 ¼” x 51 5/8” x 6”
- Lullaby Earth – 27 ¼” x 51 5/8” x 6”
In terms of charitable giving and corporate social responsibility, My Green Mattress offers a discount to members of the U.S. military, but there’s no indication that the company has a charitable arm other a donation/refund program if you return your mattress after your 100 night comfort trial.
Savvy Rest have the most robust charitable giving program and B Corp status (none of the other mattress companies have this currently).
Soaring Heart are also socially engaged, with quarterly Charity Pillow Builds and a goal is to direct 1% of annual gross sales to charitable causes. Soaring Heart also created a Scholarship at Seattle’s Pride Foundation to fund students working in the area of mental health and compassionate care.
OMI don’t appear to have any charitable arm to their businesses. Naturepedic are members of 1% for the Planet, at least, although they don’t seem to do much else.
Sleep Lily, Nook, and NaturalMat don’t mention any charitable side to their business and seem focused purely on their products.
Warranty and refunds
My Green Mattress offer a generous 100-night sleep trial for their crib mattresses and a full 10-year warranty for manufacturing defects. If you don’t want to keep the mattress after your 100 nights, My Green Mattress will work with you to donate it to a local charity and then refund your money. OMI offer a similar 90-day sleep trial and a 20-year limited warranty on all mattresses.
All Naturepedic crib mattresses come with a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee provided the product was purchased directly from Naturepedic. You have to pay all shipping costs (including outbound costs associated with any promotions), however. Naturepedic have a 10 year warranty against manufacturing defects, with full coverage in the first 5 years and pro-rated coverage thereafter.
Savvy Rest are rather miserly in terms of their return policy. Unlike most other companies, they just don’t do returns, claiming that to do so would necessitate them spraying their products with toxic chemicals.
All in all, OMI is your best bet for a no expense spared non-toxic, eco-friendly, high-quality, latex mattress, but my top pick is My Green Mattress because they make a fantastic eco-friendly and non-toxic crib mattress with great certifications for less than half the price of OMI’s mattresses. My Green Mattress is an especially good choice if you’re looking for a slightly firmer crib mattress that is a slightly snugger fit.
