Overview

Badger Pre-Shave Oil comes with a top safety rating from the Environmental Working Group, is certified organic, cruelty-free and vegan, with Leaping Bunny and PETA ‘Caring Consumer’ seals of approval and offers a great shave to boot. It is also gluten-free and non-GMO.

All of the ingredients in this oil are recognizable and from natural sources. This includes extra virgin olive oil, seabuckthorn and rosehip extracts blended with baobab oil to enhance glide and prevent razor burn.

how to use

Used on its own, this oil provides a thin layer of lubrication for shaving. It is best used, however, a few minutes before using a natural shaving soap.

For best results, massage a few drops of Badge Pre-Shave Oil onto warm, freshly washed skin, leave for a minute and then lather up with shaving soap.

Downsides of Badger Pre-Shave Oil

This shave oil is great for use at home, but beware when you’re traveling. The bottle cap is prone to coming loose, which can cause a smelly, oily leak in your luggage.

Why smelly? Because while natural, this oil does have a rather strong scent. It’s not a light shaving oil, so a little goes a long way.

Sustainability at Badger

Badger is a B Corp that makes its products in the USA using Fair Trade and organic ingredients where possible. It has an impressive array of energy- and water-saving initiatives and environmental practices at its offices and manufacturing facilities.

In addition, Badger’s manufacturing processes do not create any toxic waste that could get into the local water system. And the company takes care to package products in recyclable and reusable tins and uses mostly recycled and recyclable packaging. It even ships its products UPS carbon neutral.

Badger vs. the competition

There’s not a lot to choose from between Badger Pre-Shave Oil, Amanprana Razoli Shaving Oil (see our review), and Qēt Botanicals Fresh Body Oil for Shaving, Showering & Massage (see our review). All three get top ratings from us and EWG and all three companies are environmentally and socially engaged.

Badger vs. Amanprana shaving oils

Amanprana Razoli Shaving Oil also gets a top rating (1) from EWG, contains natural organic ingredients and poses little to no risk of environmental toxicity or harm to human health. It offers a smooth shave and can be used on both face and body without clogging pores or causing irritation. The oil is vegan-friendly and comes in a recyclable glass bottle as the company eschews the use of plastics.

Amanprana also uses sustainably sourced and recyclable packaging, including organic paper, glues and inks, and it promotes awareness and raises funds for the Save the Sea campaign to reduce overfishing and support the oceans. The company also encourages employees to cycle to work, and even its offices are sustainable and ecologically sound, constructed using FSC wood and heated and powered with renewable energy.

Badger vs. Qēt Botanicals shaving oils

The Fresh Body Oil from Qēt Botanicals is a slightly more versatile choice than Amanprana and Badger as it can be used for dry brushing, shaving, showering, and massage. It is also very concentrated, with no water, synthetic chemicals, or fillers.

Qēt Botanicals uses minimal packaging and recyclable containers, never tests on animals, uses no animal parts or by-products, and creates formulas using organic and sustainably wild harvested ingredients certified by Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (OTCO) and recognized by the National Organic Program for the USDA. All ingredients are 100% natural, nontoxic, and always fully disclosed and all products are ranked in the safest category of Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep® database.

The company has received numerous awards for its products and sustainable packaging, with:

  • Recyclable tree-free labels made of stone
  • All materials printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper
  • Full offsetting of its carbon footprint from shipping
  • Renewable energy powered web hosting.

Final thoughts on Badger Pre-Shave Oil

Any one of the three shaving oils we mention above would be an excellent eco-friendly choice. If you plan on using Badger Shave Soap (see our review), however, this pairs nicely with their pre-shave oil.

If you’re planning on using oil alone, Amanprana’s oil may be the best option. And, if versatility is what you’re after, Qēt Botanicals’ oil is a top choice.
