What we like

  • Made with certified organic materials
  • Available in three firmness ratings
  • Super low-profile, ideal for toddlers and stomach-sleepers (and for travel!)
  • Removable zippered organic cover
  • Perforated for airflow and cooling effect
  • Breathable (great for hot sleepers)
  • Non-toxic
  • U.S. made
  • Ships fast

What could be better

  • Some plastic packaging
  • Only available up to what is usually considered ‘soft’ by adult standards

At a glance:

  • Materials: Organic latex and cotton
  • Certifications: GOLS, GOTS, Green America Green Business, American Forests partner
  • Cost: $69 (Pairs available at a discount)
  • Firmness: Soft, Medium, Firm (though these are all softer than adult pillows)
  • Adjustable: No

Turmerry’s Low-Profile Toddler Pillow comprises certified organic latex and undyed certified organic cotton. It’s a great little pillow for little kids and for smaller stomach-sleepers, like me! Some folks also report loving this low-profile pillow for lower back support when sitting and as a slightly longer than normal travel pillow.

This pillow is made of a single piece of molded latex with perforations for extra airflow and breathability. It’s super soft, with even the firmer version still technically rating as soft on an adult density scale.

Because the pillow is molded, you can’t adjust the height. This pillow is also thin enough that it would tear easily if you regularly fold it to try to get a bit more height or to stash in your luggage when traveling.

Great for babies 18-months and up

The Turmerry Toddler Pillow is best for toddlers 18 months and older who now sleep in their own bed.

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ safe sleep guidelines say that until 12 months, and ideally up to 18 months, babies should sleep on a firm, flat surface free of pillows, blankets and other soft bedding.

Firmness and size

The Turmerry Low-Profile Toddler Pillow is available in three levels of firmness. Turmerry lists these as:

  • Soft (45K)
  • Medium (55K)
  • Firm (65K).

The K rating is used for natural latex only. Typical use of the K density ratings is as follows:

  • 65K Soft
  • 75K Medium
  • 85K Firm
  • 95K Extra Firm.

What’s the takeaway? In short, even if you go for a firm version of this low-profile toddler pillow, the pillow will steel feel soft by adult standards.

Note, too, that the Turmerry Low-Profile Pillow measures:

  • 20 inches long
  • 12 inches wide
  • 2 inches high.

This means the pillow is slightly longer than most travel pillows, so may not fit some travel pillowcases.

My experience

Right out of the box I loved the Turmerry Toddler Pillow. It’s perfect for my two-year-old, though I’ve also used it myself as a smaller stomach-sleeper.

The pillow is super soft and very breathable, so your face and head stay cool even on hot nights. This is ideal for busy toddlers who run hot. My kid sleeps face down a lot of the time, so I’m very conscious of needing a breathable, non-toxic, low-profile pillow for safety.

Toddlers don’t need a big fluffy pillow. Quite the opposite, in fact. Most toddlers don’t need a pillow at all, and high profile pillows should definitely be avoided as this can risk suffocation and overheating, and upset normal spine development.

Care and maintenance

Given how messy toddlers can be, I recommend getting an extra pillow cover for any toddler pillow. The nice thing about this latex pillow, though, is that you can quickly remove the cover and give the pillow a wipe with a damp cloth if any spills or accidents happen.

The cover itself is also machine washable, though it may shrink a little at first. Wash it on cool and avoid bleach and harsh detergents. Make sure it’s fully dry before you put the cover back on the pillow. Try to avoid bending the pillow in the process as the latex is fairly fragile because of its softness and thinness.

Certifications

GOTS organic logo

Turmerry was established with sustainability and health top of mind. The company is owned and operated by a woman of color and while Turmerry doesn’t boast as many green certifications as bigger bedding companies, it’s got the ones that matter.

It’s also lovely to see a bedding company that exclusively sells non-toxic, organic and natural bedding. This makes it much easier to feel confident in your purchases. Most of Turmerry’s products comprise GOLS certified organic latex, organic cotton, linen, or bamboo.

For the Toddler Pillow, Turmerry holds GOLS certification under ID number 886641. This was valid at the time of writing (I checked it here at Control Union).

Corporate Social Responsibility

Turmerry became a Green America Green Business in July 2023, demonstrating its sustainable and eco-friendly approach. Like Leaf Score, Turmerry is also a long-time partner with American Forests and is already responsible for planting more than 36,000 trees.

The company donates returns (organic mattress toppers mostly) to those in need in the U.S. and also works with food banks in North Carolina, where Turmerry is based. Turmerry also works with charitable organizations in Kerala, India, to distribute food kits for families living in poverty.

Turmerry offers discounts if you’re a veteran, first responder, senior, teacher, or student.

Sustainable shipping

Turmerry ships its products in plain cardboard boxes with no unnecessary packaging. By avoiding branding on boxes, Turmerry saves on dyes and energy.

My toddler pillow arrived with my buckwheat pillow, both in plastic bags for protection. The flexible plastic is technically recyclable, but facilities vary depending on where you live. I’d love to see Turmerry switch to biodegradable or reusable organic cotton bags instead of plastic poly bags.

The company already ships some products, such as pillow protectors and bedding, in plastic-free packaging.

Warranty and returns

If you aren’t happy with this low-profile pillow, Turmerry offers a 120 Day Return Policy. You can return unused pillows (you pay for shipping) in their original packaging for a full refund within 120 days of your purchase.

If you’ve used your pillow but don’t like it, Turmerry offers up to 110% store credit. The catch is that you have to donate the pillow, which Turmerry will help you with.

Turmerry will also replace any items that arrive damaged (take photos!).

Final thoughts

The Turmerry Low-Profile Toddler Pillow is non-toxic, sustainably made, and great for toddlers, stomach-sleepers, and for travel. It feels super soft, is lightweight but well made, and carries all the relevant green certifications.

All in all, I highly recommend this organic latex pillow for your eco-friendly nursery (or for adult use!).
