Lullaby Earth Crib Mattresses

Leaf Score

Highlights: Breathable, waterproof, made from recycled materials, non-toxic, and reasonably priced. No flame retardant chemicals.

Lullaby Earth Crib Mattresses at a glance:

Country of Origin:USA
Materials:Recycled polyester and polyethylene
Certifications:Greenguard Gold certified
UL-certified formaldehyde-free
Made Safe certified

All Lullaby Earth crib mattresses comprise recycled polyester with a waterproof surface made with polyethylene that meets food contact standards and is recyclable. Lullaby Earth crib mattresses are Greenguard Gold certified, UL-certified formaldehyde-free, and carry the rare Made Safe certification as non-toxic.

The Lullaby Earth Breeze Air mattress has a breathable design and is an all-in-one crib mattress from Lullaby Earth. The Healthy Support mattresses are also well designed but a touch less airy, though you can add a breathable topper. Breeze Air is a two-stage (i.e. dual firmness) mattress suitable for use for infants and toddlers, as is one of the Health Support mattresses.

The typical prices for these mattresses are as follows:

Are Lullaby Earth mattresses non-toxic?

Lullaby Earth baby crib mattresses pass all government flammability standards without the use of flame retardant chemicals. That means no:

  • Phosphates
  • Boric acid
  • Brominated chemicals
  • Chlorinated chemicals
  • Fiberglass
  • Silica-infused rayon
  • Other egregious chemicals.

Lullaby Earth also does not use:

  • Polyurethane foam
  • Vinyl
  • PVC
  • Phthalates
  • Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs)
  • Antibacterial treatments.

While Lullaby Earth mattresses are more affordable than others I recommend at Leaf Score, they still carry impressive green certifications. These include:

  • Greenguard Gold
  • UL-certified formaldehyde-free
  • Made Safe certified.

Are Lullaby Earth mattresses waterproof?

All Lullaby Earth mattresses feature patented waterproofing comprising polyethylene, similar to Naturepedic crib mattresses. This is food-grade polyethylene and is safe for skin contact, though it’s actually a backing layer underneath a washable cover.

What’s in a Lullaby Earth crib mattress?

The Lullaby Earth crib mattresses feature a patented WaveSupport core made from recycled polyester, with materials meeting FDA food contact standards. They are easy to wipe clean and have a seamless edge design which helps prevent bacteria build-up and keeps the inside of the crib mattress clean and dry.

The firm, flat surface and reinforced edge support provides a comfortable and safer sleep environment. Most of these mattresses can be used through infancy, toddlerhood, and beyond.

Unfortunately, Lullaby Earth isn’t fully transparent about what’s in these mattresses. The company focuses instead on telling us what’s not in its products. I’m not a fan of guesswork, so Lullaby Earth lose major points from me on this front.

That said, Lullaby Earth is a Naturepedic company, and we do trust Naturepedic. So if you’re looking for a more affordable crib mattress, Lullaby Earth is a top choice.

Are Lullaby Earth mattresses breathable?

Lullaby Earth introduced their Airflow Topper In 2013, followed by their Breeze Air crib mattress in 2014. This award-winning mattress features the same safety features as their other mattresses but has an added breathable layer for a cool, dry sleep.

This layer is also removable and machine washable, which is an important factor in distinguishing these mattresses from other ‘breathable’ mattresses that are simply mattresses without a waterproof cover; such mattresses can easily become soiled and require a waterproof cover (which then negates the whole ‘breathability’ concept).

The separate breathable layer of the Lullaby Earth mattresses may reduce rebreathing, and the company cites third-party testing in support of that claim. They also note in various marketing materials that these breathable mattress designs may reduce the risk of suffocation (which I’m not sure is permissible under current marketing laws in the US as this might make such mattresses medical devices).

Lullaby Earth don’t, however, provide details of these tests.

Who recommends Lullaby Earth crib mattresses?

Despite its drawbacks, Lullaby Earth products are recommended by a plethora of organizations, including:

  • The Zero Toxics Product Registry
  • AllergyKids Foundation
  • Mommy Greenest,
  • Kids for Saving Earth.

This award-winning company is a member of Green America and the Green Business Network, the American Sustainable Business Council, and the National Parenting Center, and a partner of Women’s Voices for the Earth and works with the Environmental Media Association, in addition to being Proudly Made In U.S.A.

Though no longer available, Lullaby Earth’s original Wisp Air won 2018 Product of the Year for a crib mattress and 2018 Eco-Friendly Product of the Year from Creative Child.

Warranty and returns on Lullaby Earth crib mattresses

All of the crib mattresses from Lullaby Earth come with:

  • 30 Day Money Back Guarantee
  • Lifetime Limited Warranty
  • Free Shipping
  • Free Returns.

All Lullaby Earth products ship free, with free return shipping provided the product has not been damaged, the original box is still available and the product was purchased directly from Lullaby Earth. The Lullaby Earth crib mattress lifetime limited warranty is applicable only to the original purchaser.

Lullaby Earth vs. Naturepedic, My Green Mattress, OMI, Soaring Heart, SleepLily, and Savvy Rest

Lullaby Earth offers some of the most affordable crib mattresses and probably some of the lightest (though they don’t specify a weight). I’d still encourage you to ignore the marketing hype over breathability and go for either a Naturepedic or My Green Mattress crib mattress, however, if you can stretch your budget a little.

How the cost compares

Put simply, Lullaby Earth offers a less expensive version of the Naturepedic lightweight mattress and is made with recycled polyester and polyethylene instead of organic materials. While this one has good non-toxic certifications, if you’re going to spend over $200 on a crib mattress, I’d strongly suggest going with My Green Mattress (see our review) or Naturepedic instead. If it’s a lightweight mattress you’re after, the Naturepedic Lightweight is arguably your best option (see our review).

In general, Naturepedic can be considered an excellent mid-price option for an eco-friendly and non-toxic crib mattress. Naturepedic’s Organic Cotton Classic (View Price on Amazon) and Lightweight Classic (View Price on Amazon) both cost between $255 and $299 and boast a waterproof cover, unlike My Green Mattress, where you’d have to buy separate covers or puddle pads. My Green Mattress is still a top pick too for a mid-price crib mattress, priced at $279 on Amazon, with a heap of certifications (View Price on Amazon).

Naturepedic’s Ultra and 2-in-1 Ultra Quilted Deluxe mattresses (View Price on Amazon) are a little pricier at $399 but these are latex-free and the latter is dual-sided. SleepLily’s innerspring mattress costs $360, making it second only to OMI for most expensive innerspring crib mattress. Soaring Heart mattresses cost around $420, with Savvy Rest priced at $399 with similar certifications and specifications as a latex, wool, and cotton mattress (View Price on Savvy Rest).

Wool and fire resistance

Lullaby Earth’s wool-free crib mattress is made with recycled polyester and polyethylene, but it’s not entirely clear how Lullaby Earth meet fire safety standards. If you’re looking specifically for wool-free crib mattress, Naturepedic offer some of the best options and are transparent about using a mixture of baking soda, silica, and eucalyptus as a natural flame retardant instead of wool. Their quilted mattresses do use wool, however, although there is an option to go wool-free.

OMI, Soaring Heart, Sleep Lily, and Savvy Rest all include wool in their crib mattresses.

There are some size differences between these mattresses that are worth bearing in mind if you have already bought a crib. Lullaby Earth’s crib mattress is one of the smaller crib mattresses, so if your crib runs towards the larger end of the standard size, you may find there are gaps that could prove unsafe for an infant.

That said, Lullaby Earth crib mattresses measure 27 1/4″ x 51 5/8″ x 6″, making them a good fit for most standard full-size cribs.

The Soaring Heart mattress is a little bigger than Naturepedic’s mattresses and at the top end of the standard size measurements for a crib mattress (although it’s also thinner at just 3.5 inches compared to most crib mattresses measuring 5 or 6 inches). Savvy Rest’s crib mattress is also slightly longer and wider than Naturepedic’s crib mattresses, while OMI’s mattresses are as long but a little wider. For comparison, here are the mattresses listed from largest to smallest in terms of width and length:

  • Nook Pebble Pure – 28” x 53” x 4”
  • Soaring Heart – 28 5/8” x 52 3/8” x 3 ½ “
  • Sleep Lily – 28” x 52” x 6”
  • OMI – 28” x 52” x 6”
  • NaturalMat – 28” x 52” x 6”
  • Savvy Baby – 27 ½” x 52” x 6
  • My Green Mattress – 27 1/4″ x 52″ x 6″
  • Naturepedic – 27 ¼” x 51 5/8” x 6”
  • Lullaby Earth – 27 ¼” x 51 5/8” x 6”.

Sustainability and ethics

In terms of charitable giving and corporate social responsibility, Lullaby Earth don’t seem to be up to much.

Sleep Lily, Nook, and NaturalMat also don’t mention any charitable side to their business and seem focused purely on their products.

Savvy Rest have the most robust charitable giving program and B Corp status (none of the other mattress companies have this currently).

Soaring Heart are also socially engaged, with quarterly Charity Pillow Builds and a goal is to direct 1% of annual gross sales to charitable causes. Soaring Heart also created a Scholarship at Seattle’s Pride Foundation to fund students working in the area of mental health and compassionate care.

OMI don’t appear to have any charitable arm to their businesses.

Naturepedic are members of 1% for the Planet, at least, although they don’t seem to do much else.

My Green Mattress offers a discount to members of the U.S. military, but there’s no indication that the company has a charitable arm other a donation/refund program if you return your mattress after your 100 night comfort trial.

Final thoughts on Lullaby Earth crib mattresses

Lullaby Earth offers one of the best, most eco-friendly and likely non-toxic affordable crib mattresses around. These mattresses are likely to be far better than almost all other mattresses at a similar price point. They’re also waterproof and breathable, with washable covers.

If you can, though, I’d try to find the $50 or so more to stump for Naturepedic’s lightweight crib mattress. Or ask family and friends to pitch in for a Naturepedic two-stage mattress or My Green Mattress instead.

All in all, if you’re looking for a quality crib mattress made from recycled materials that is at a reasonable price point, Lullaby Earth is a good option. There are, however, far better crib mattresses that are made with natural materials, have a waterproof cover, and can be topped with a removable breathable layer should you so wish.
