What we like

All Lullaby Earth crib mattresses comprise recycled polyester with a waterproof surface made with polyethylene that meets food contact standards and is recyclable.

While Lullaby Earth mattresses are more affordable than others I recommend at Leaf Score, they still carry impressive green certifications. These include:

  • Greenguard Gold
  • UL-certified formaldehyde-free
  • Made Safe certified.

Note that Lullaby Earth is owned by Naturepedic, one of our favorite crib mattress makers.

The Lullaby Earth Healthy Support two-stage (i.e., dual firmness) mattress is suitable for use for infants and toddlers, making this a longer-lasting purchase that saves money and resources.

All Lullaby Earth mattresses feature patented waterproofing comprising polyethylene, similar to Naturepedic crib mattresses. This is food-grade polyethylene and is safe for skin contact, though it’s actually a backing layer underneath a washable cover.

A non-toxic crib mattress

Lullaby Earth baby crib mattresses pass all government flammability standards without the use of flame retardant chemicals. That means no:

  • Phosphates
  • Boric acid
  • Brominated chemicals
  • Chlorinated chemicals
  • Fiberglass
  • Silica-infused rayon
  • Other egregious chemicals.

Lullaby Earth also does not use:

  • Polyurethane foam
  • Vinyl
  • PVC
  • Phthalates
  • Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs)
  • Antibacterial treatments.

What’s inside?

The Lullaby Earth crib mattresses feature a patented WaveSupport core made from recycled polyester, with materials meeting FDA food contact standards. They are easy to wipe clean and have a seamless edge design which helps prevent bacteria build-up and keeps the inside of the crib mattress clean and dry.

The firm, flat surface and reinforced edge support provides a comfortable and safer sleep environment. Most of these mattresses can be used through infancy, toddlerhood, and beyond.

The downsides

Aside from the obvious (this crib mattress is made with plastic), the other biggest downside to the mattress is that Lullaby Earth isn’t fully transparent about what’s inside the mattress. The company focuses instead on telling us what’s not in its products. I’m not a fan of guesswork, so Lullaby Earth lose major points from me on this front.

That said, Lullaby Earth is a Naturepedic company, and we do trust Naturepedic. So, if you’re looking for a more affordable crib mattress, Lullaby Earth is a top choice.

Is it really breathable?

Lullaby Earth introduced their Airflow Topper In 2013, followed by their Breeze Air crib mattress in 2014. This award-winning mattress features the same safety features as their other mattresses but has an added breathable layer for a cool, dry sleep.

The breathable layer is also removable and machine washable, which is an important factor in distinguishing these mattresses from other ‘breathable’ mattresses that are simply mattresses without a waterproof cover; such mattresses can easily become soiled and require a waterproof cover (which then negates the whole ‘breathability’ concept).

The separate breathable layer of the Lullaby Earth mattresses may reduce rebreathing, and the company cites third-party testing in support of that claim. They also note in various marketing materials that these breathable mattress designs may reduce the risk of suffocation (which I’m not sure is permissible under current marketing laws in the US as this might make such mattresses medical devices).

Lullaby Earth doesn’t provide details of these tests though.

Warranty and returns

All of the crib mattresses from Lullaby Earth come with:

  • 30 Day Money Back Guarantee
  • Lifetime Limited Warranty
  • Free Shipping
  • Free Returns.

All Lullaby Earth products ship free, with free return shipping provided the product has not been damaged, the original box is still available and the product was purchased directly from Lullaby Earth. The Lullaby Earth crib mattress lifetime limited warranty is applicable only to the original purchaser.

Vs. the competition

Lullaby Earth offers some of the most affordable crib mattresses and probably some of the lightest. I’d still encourage you to ignore the marketing hype over breathability and go for either a Naturepedic (see our review) or My Green Mattress crib mattress (see our review), however, if you can stretch your budget a little.

What's in a plastic?

While Lullaby Earth and Naturepedic use the WaveSupport module inside their mattresses, one of the biggest differences is that Lullaby Earth’s is made of recycled polyethylene and Naturepedic’s is made of sugarcane bioplastic.

How the cost compares

Put simply, Lullaby Earth offers a less expensive version of the Naturepedic lightweight mattress and is made with recycled polyester and polyethylene instead of organic materials. While this one has good non-toxic certifications, if you’re going to spend over $200 on a crib mattress, I’d strongly suggest going with My Green Mattress (see our review) or Naturepedic instead. If it’s a lightweight mattress you’re after, the Naturepedic Lightweight is arguably your best option (see our review).

Naturepedic’s Organic Cotton Classic (View Price on Amazon) and Lightweight Classic (View Price on Amazon) both cost between $255 and $299 and boast a waterproof cover, unlike My Green Mattress, where you’d have to buy separate covers or puddle pads. My Green Mattress is still a top pick too for a mid-price crib mattress, priced at $279 on Amazon, with a heap of certifications (View Price on Amazon).

Wool and fire resistance

Lullaby Earth’s wool-free crib mattress is made with recycled polyester and polyethylene, but it’s not entirely clear how Lullaby Earth meets fire safety standards.

If you’re looking specifically for wool-free crib mattress, Naturepedic offers some of the best options.

Size

Lullaby Earth crib mattresses measure 27 1/4″ x 51 5/8″ x 6″, making them a good fit for most standard full-size cribs.

If you’ve already bought a crib, however, bear in mind that Lullaby Earth’s crib mattress is a tiny bit smaller than standard. So, if your crib runs towards the larger end of the standard size, you may find there are gaps that could prove unsafe for an infant.

Sustainability and ethics

This award-winning company is a member of:

  • Green America
  • The Green Business Network
  • The American Sustainable Business Council
  • National Parenting Center
  • Women’s Voices for the Earth.

Lullaby Earth also works with the Environmental Media Association, in addition to being Proudly Made In U.S.A.

Final thoughts

Lullaby Earth offers one of the best, most eco-friendly and likely non-toxic affordable crib mattresses around. These mattresses are likely to be far better than almost all other mattresses at a similar price point. They’re also waterproof and breathable, with washable covers.

If you can, though, I’d try to find the $50 or so more to stump for Naturepedic’s lightweight crib mattress. Or ask family and friends to pitch in for a Naturepedic two-stage mattress or My Green Mattress instead.

All in all, if you’re looking for a quality crib mattress made from recycled materials that is at a reasonable price point, Lullaby Earth is a good option. There are, however, far better crib mattresses that are made with natural materials, have a waterproof cover, and can be topped with a removable breathable layer should you so wish.
