Hook and Loom Eco Cotton Rugs are vibrant cotton rugs made using genuine recycled cotton (not just rejected new cotton). These handcrafted rugs are colorful, handcrafted, and cozy and are made on special looms using the company’s unique recycled Eco Cotton. They do not contain latex backing or adhesives and because the recycled cotton comes pre-dyed and pre-shrunk, these rugs do not fade and are unlikely to off-gas as they have not been re-treated with azo dyes or other toxic chemicals.

With that said, the machine washable flatweave cotton rugs do shrink. Although the fibers are ore-washed, the new yarns into which they are spun have the tendency to shrink.
Hook and Loom’s Eco Cotton is made using clean donated textiles that are meticulously sorted by color, with snaps, zippers, and buttons removed and the fiber spun into new colorful yarns. Many ‘recycled’ cotton rugs are actually made with new cotton that has been rejected by industry for having short fibers. Eco Cotton is the real deal, which is why there may be small amounts of polyester and other fibers in the mix. Other ‘recycled’ cotton that is simply new cotton will have been bleached and dyed and is liable to off-gas and leach toxic chemicals. Not so with Eco Cotton.

In many ways, genuine recycled cotton is more earth-friendly than new organic cotton as this still requires resources such as water and farmland. What’s more, by recycling old textiles in this way, Hook and Loom help divert these textiles from landfill.
This company is based in Massachusetts and make rugs in carefully selected workshops in India, free from child labor. The rugs are made from recovered textile fibers without dyes or chemicals and are shipped with minimal packaging to reduce environmental impact.
Rugs start at $22 for 2′ x 3′ and are handwoven on wooden looms. They are available in a variety of colors, patterns, and sizes and are made without stain repellents, fire retardants, or other chemicals.
Hook & Loom vs. Under the Nile
Hook and Loom Eco Cotton rugs are a fantastic option for the eco-friendly home.
They are made of genuinely recycled cotton and are not subjected to chemical treatment by Hook and Loom themselves.
However, Under the Nile win top in class for their eco-friendly recycled cotton rugs because they control the entire manufacturing process, helping to divert scrap material from their own clothing line to make their signature rugs. This means you can be sure Under the Nile’s rugs are made with cotton that has never been treated with toxic chemicals. Under the Nile rugs are also made with GOTS certified organic cotton and are Fair Trade certified.
Under the Nile’s selection of rugs is much smaller than Hook and Loom’s Eco Cotton collection, however. So, if you’re looking for a colorful rug, Hook and Loom Eco Cotton rugs are a great place to look.
Both Under the Nile and Hook and Loom are far superior to the Spura and Leone recycled rugs as the latter companies have not made any public commitments to eschew the use of toxic chemicals.
