Organic Weave are arguably the best company around when it comes to eco-friendly rugs. They make safe and socially-conscious rugs using wool and cotton that carry GOTS and GoodWeave certifications. Overview
Organic Weave’s Cotton Rugs are eco-friendly rugs made with 100% organic cotton with a natural sheen that adds both texture and luster. These rugs can be made to measure with custom colors and designs and are handcrafted by master weavers in India. Suitable for any room in the house, including nurseries and playrooms, these rugs are easy to maintain, sustainable, and non-toxic.
Organic Weave’s organic cotton rugs are made by skilled women artisans in a cooperative environment in rural India and are soft, cozy, and stylish. They use FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified natural rubber (or latex) in the manufacture of the hand-tufted rugs to secure (or glue) the pile of the rug to the organic cotton canvas backing. Handwoven rugs are reversible, lightweight, and durable, and do not contain latex.
Delivery can take approximately 2 weeks, depending on the destination, for rugs already in stock or 8-12 weeks for custom orders handmade to order. All made-to-order items are non-refundable.
The sheer variety of styles available at Organic Weave is quite incredible, especially considering that most other manufacturers can barely scrape together one lackluster eco-friendly jute rug. They even offer organic wool and/or cotton personalized monogrammed rugs and word art rugs ideal for a kid’s bedroom or indulgent home office.
Organic Weave vs. Coyuchi vs. Bungalow Rose
Organic Weave are one of the best in class for organic cotton rugs with only Coyuchi rivaling them for eco-credentials and best practices. They not only use GOTS certified organic wool and cotton, and FSC natural latex (where needed), they are GoodWeave certified to ensure no child labor is involved in the manufacture of their rugs, and they don’t use toxic chemicals in the manufacture of any of their products.
Organic Weave are clearly committed to sustainability, safety, and social fairness, and never sell rugs that don’t meet their high standards. While other companies produce the occasional eco-friendly and/or FairTrade certified rug, if you’re looking for a top-quality organic cotton rug from a company with a solid set of ethics, look to Organic Weave. The company has products with enough variety in colors, patterns, and styles to satisfy almost every demand. And, if you don’t find what you need, they are very open to custom orders.
All this said, Coyuchi have been producing top-quality organic cotton rugs for more than 20 years and arguably have more robust eco-certifications than Organic Weave. Their rugs are sourced from European manufacturers who follow the REACH chemical standards aimed at reducing chemical risk to human health and the environment. They also adhere to the Restricted Substances List (RSL) of the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) and try to source from as many Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified suppliers as possible. They also employ a zero-waste water recycling method, have Fair Trade certification and are a member of 1% for the Planet. They use environmentally friendly packaging and shipping methods and are also involved in the Fibershed program which supports sustainability and social enterprise within the textile sector.
While picking a top choice is difficult in this category, Organic Weave take first place. This is because they offer a much broader range of styles and sizes than Coyuchi who really only offer two rugs. Organic Weave have handtufted, handwoven, flatwoven, plus wool and cotton shag rugs available in pretty much any color, shape, and style you can think of and offer custom options (including monogrammed rugs!) in case their current range doesn’t meet your needs.
As for Bungalow Rose’s organic cotton rug, while this rug itself looks to be made with eco-friendly organic cotton, it is not GOTS certified, nor does it carry any other certifications. This may mean that the rug has been treated with chemicals you wouldn’t want in your home, and it is probably not a good choice for anyone with multiple chemical sensitivities.
