The Dame reusable applicator has a semi-gloss matt finish and ergonomic design to make it easy and comfortable to use. It comes with a travel pouch for easy storage, and the company promises free replacement should anything go amiss. This thing is meant to last you a lifetime, making it a solid investment if you’re a fan of tampons and find plastic applicators easier than their cardboard equivalents. No wonder they met their initial £20,000 fundraising goal in just four days.

The Dame works like any applicator, fitting all standard tampons sizes. Materials are tested to ISO 22196 and JIS Z 2801 standards and also conforms to medical standards, passing cytotoxicity tests according to ISO 10993-5, biocompatibility tests according to ISO 10993-10, and ISO 10993-11 (Acute Systemic Toxicity) and USP Class VI.

Because of the inbuilt antimicrobial technology, cleaning your Dame is simple and easy: wipe, rinse, dry and store. Sterilize the applicator between periods by boiling it in water for a few minutes.

Dame have thoughts of everything, even ensuring that their travel pouch is made with sustainable organic cotton. And, when you buy this applicator, you get six organic tampons to get you started. These tampons are free from chlorine bleach, rayon, pesticides and fragrances, are biodegradable and made with 100 percent organic cotton.

Dame won the B Corp Hackathon for Best Sustainable Business idea and their slogan is the rather marvelous “Bleed red. Think green”. Dame have also partnered with Bloody Good Period, a charity which gives period supplies to asylum seekers, refugees and those who can’t afford them. The pre-made Dame Box costs just £5 and provides a two-month supply of sanitary protection, along with a cotton bag and travel wallet to help a displaced person in need. The Dame Box can be donated as a one-off or on a monthly basis.

Dame vs. Competitors

There is currently no competitor on the market for a reusable applicator for tampon insertion but, even if there was, Dame’s game is on point.
