Avocado Mattress vs. PlushBeds Botanical Bliss: Which is Better?

Written by The LeafScore Team

Updated:

If you are choosing between the Avocado Green mattress and the Botanical Bliss by Plushbeds, you are headed in the right direction. Both are great mattresses, but here is how to decide.

Our team has staff-tested both of these mattresses extensively. As we shared in our full review, PlushBeds is a mid-range mattress brand for those seeking a quality mattress. The company’s Botanical Bliss model also earns a reputation for being eco-friendly, though it’s not certified vegan like the Natural Bliss.

Comparing key metrics for Avocado Mattress and Plushbeds Botanical Bliss.

Both of these mattresses are organic, VOC free, and non-toxic, plus they have the certifications to back up their marketing claims. They both earn 5-Leaves in our scoring system.

PlushBeds began in 2008 and currently operates within a certified organic manufacturing facility in California. Similar to Avocado, each mattress arrives compressed in a box and is handcrafted in the USA from GOTS-certified cotton and wool.

The main difference from a usability standpoint is that Avocado Green comes ready top use right out of the box, whereas the Botanical Bliss, as an all latex product requires some assembly. You have to physically take the latex layers and zip them inside the organic cotton cover, which is no small task and is not a fit for seniors or singles.

Based on sleep style

If you go with the Botanical Bliss, you’ll be sleeping on organic Talalay and Dunlop latex layers. The Bliss comes in medium or firm options and lets you unzip and rearrange comfort layers to adjust firmness, but keep in mind this is no easy task. The layers are sticky and hard to move so we would recommend getting your preferred configuration setup and leaving it in place. This mattress is a solid choice for hot sleepers, as well as for back-sleepers and stomach-sleepers.

By contrast, Avocado Green is a hybrid mattress—organic latex, wool, cotton combined with pocketed/coils for enhanced support and edge stability. The mattress firmness is medium (around 7/10), with a pillow top option. Because of its coil core, it delivers very good spinal alignment, especially for back and stomach sleepers, and holds up well for heavier sleepers. Edge support is stronger than the Botanical Bliss.

Certifications of note

  • Eco-Institut Certified: Guarantees that a product has been tested for emissions and toxicity and meets strict safety and environmental requirements.
  • Control Union Certified: Guarantees a product fulfills the requirements of any relevant certifications and inspections. In this instance, the mattresses are approved for sustainability.
  • Forest Stewardship Council Certified: Designates that the wood used was harvested from responsibly managed forests.
  • EcoWool: This wool comes from sheep on ranches in the Pacific Northwest and designates that it was raised in alignment with sustainability practices and free from exposure to chemical pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, and hormones (note: EcoWool is not certified organic).
  • Sustainable Furnishings Council: Membership indicates that a company is taking immediate steps to minimize its carbon emissions, reduce waste and pollution, and source renewable materials when possible.
  •  TerraPass carbon neutral: Allows businesses to purchase carbon offsets to reduce their share of emissions and shrink their carbon footprint.
  •  A+ Better Business Bureau (BBB): Indicates that a company has an excellent track record with customers and consistently meets their needs.

Bottom line

These mattresses are very comparable and offer choices to fit most sleep styles. However, Avocado might edge out the Botanical Bliss with its longer sleep trial offer (one year vs. 100 days) and the slightly lower price point, plus lack of assembly.
