Editorial

PlushBeds makes its mattresses to order in a GOTS certified factory in Camarillo, California. Some of the mattresses, like the Botanical Bliss model, are GreenGuard Gold and Eco Institut certified and comprise only organic, non-toxic materials. The Bliss mattress features ultra-dense Arpico latex, which is more resistant to indentation and sagging and offers more robust core support and comfort for larger bodies, and is overall the flagship sustainable product from the brand. Several members of our team have slept on the Bliss and rate it highly for most sleep styles, although as a pure latex mattress there is some assembly required.

We have long been impressed with Plushbed’s Vegan options as well, with mattresses like the Naural Bliss achieving full Vegan status while still carrying key certifications such as Greenguard Gold, Eco-Institut, GOLS, and others.

It is important to point out that while many of the brands mattresses are made using high quality organic ingredients, they do offer several traditional polyfoam products as well, so we have never recommended the entire brand catalog.

When buying a mattress from Plushbeds look carefully to see which models have achieved Leaf ratings.

When you move away from product safety and dig into the sustainability of the brand itself, there are several questions that arise.

First, we see that Plushbed’s buys carbon offsets for its website through TerraPass, but there doesn’t seem to be any evidence of carbon offsets for its manufacturing practices. This is an issue we spotted with Avocado Mattress as well, although Avocado is using Value Chain Abatement, or “VCAs,” to reduce emissions as part of the Climate Neutral certification program. This represents an opportunity for Plushbeds to focus on offsets for its 80,000 square foot manufacturing facility rather than its relatively low trafficked website.

As far as worker’s rights at Plushbeds facilities are concerned, the GOTS certification and domestic production in California means there is a high floor for working conditions and we as consumers can be confident that the products aren’t being produced in sweat shop conditions.
