Just because they’re cute, our pets don’t get a pass when it comes to sustainable living. And, of course, we all want to feed our cats, dogs, and other animal companions the healthiest food we can, not to mention have them sleep like royalty on the finest non-toxic beds.
OK, so maybe the Leaf Score team goes above and beyond when it comes to the health and happiness of our dogs, but you can benefit from our obsessiveness by checking out our staff picks for eco-friendly pet products.
Honest Kitchen Kindly Dog Food
Honest Kitchen are my top pick for eco-friendly, ethical, and healthy dog food. Many of their dehydrated, high-quality food mixes are nutritionally complete in themselves, while others, such as the Kindly Grain-Free Veggie, Nut & Seed Base Mix and the Fruits and Veggies Base Mix need added protein to meet AAFCO standards.
Personally, I’m a big fan of the Kindly variety (View on Amazon), which is entirely plant-based. This means that the food’s production has a far lower environmental impact than equivalent meat, dairy, and fish products. And because the food is dehydrated, you’re also saving on carbon emissions from shipping. A 7 lb box of these mixes usually expands to around 29 lbs when rehydrated!
Honest Kitchen’s products are verified non-GMO by the Non GMO Project and are made in the USA in a human food grade processing facility. No fillers or undesirable animal by-products, and no wheat, soy, or artificial preservatives. Just mix the base product with warm water, add a protein, wait 3 minutes and serve! Totally vegan, wildly nutritious, and easy to mix with mashed chickpeas, peanut butter, tofu, lentils, or animal-based protein source, Kindly is great for dogs on a plant-based or vegetarian diet and for dogs with animal protein sensitivities.
Himalayan Dog Chew Ruff Bone Dog Toy
Made with olive wood and olive oil, the Himalayan Dog Chew Ruff Bone is my top pick for a long-lasting dog chew toy. If you’re constantly trying to stop your dog gnawing on your table legs, shoes, or sticks, you need this olive wood bone.
Made of solid olive wood (which won’t splinter like sticks or furniture!), hand-harvested and sustainably sourced, then soaked in olive oil, these bones provide lasting entertainment for your pup. They’re also great for cleaning your dog’s teeth, suit every style of chewer (from puppies to power chewers), and don’t stain or smell. Choose from four sizes and make your dog’s day! Coyuchi Felted Wool Dryer Balls
My top pick for an eco-friendly, non-toxic dog ball is… a dryer ball. Yep. Coyuchi are one of my favorite ethical brands and, while their mainstays are duvets, pillows, and so forth, their felted wool dryer balls make for a great eco-friendly dog toy! Read our full review here.
Made from rice husk and natural rubber, the BecoBall is tough, free from toxic chemicals, and our top pick for a more traditional dog ball that you can throw at the park. Beco Pets are a community-minded UK company and their BecoBall holds up to enthusiastic chompers but is also non-toxic if they do break off a chunk.
Made with natural and biodegradable materials, this ball has a slightly wonky shape, making for a fun unpredictable bounce that will keep your pup guessing. It also howls and whistles when you throw it! And, thanks to the small hole in the bottom of the ball, you can stuff it with treats for a fun treasure hunt. This ball also seems to float and comes in three sizes to suit dogs big and small. Read our full review here.
Green Toys EcoSaucer Flying Disc
The Green Toys EcoSaucer Flying Disc is made from recycled plastic bags and food-safe mineral-based dyes. It is BPA-free, free of phthalates, made in California, and surpasses a variety of human safety standards that aren’t typically applied to dog toys.
Indeed, this flying saucer is technically meant for humans, so it’s great for dogs who love to fetch but probably not the best idea for aggressive chewers. At around 130 grams and 10 inches in diameter, it’s also best suited to larger dogs. The EcoSaucer is dishwasher safe and easy to clean and comes in recycled packaging printed with soy inks. Green Toys even won the Greener Packaging award for sustainable packaging, so this is a company you can feel good about in the dog park. Read our full review here.
Friendsheep Eco Kitty Caves
There are a lot of felted cat caves out there pretending to be eco-friendly, but if you want the real deal, check out the Friendsheep Eco Kitty Cave. This stylish, top-quality cat cave is made using organic Merino wool from New Zealand and is cozy enough and large enough for all cats, from kittens to Maine Coons.
While it might look like most of the other cat caves out there, this one is handmade in Nepal by female workers using organic wool from family owned farms in New Zealand. The wool is certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny, and the company only uses eco-friendly dyes, certified azo free, lead free, and compliant with the German Safety Product Safety Act. Friendsheep also engage in a whole host of environmental initiatives, including planting trees, using recycled and recyclable plastic-free packaging, and offsetting their carbon emissions.
