Aquasana AQ-4000 Countertop Water Filter
With a Leaf Score of 5/5, you can tell we’re impressed with this easy to install, efficient, and budget-friendly way to get clean, fresh water right from your kitchen faucet. Dare I say, it’s miles better than a Berkey!
If all you’re looking for is quick access to filtered drinking water, the countertop Aquasana AQ-4000 is just the ticket (View Price on Walmart). It attaches to most kitchen faucets and can be activated and turned off as needed. It doesn’t slow down water flow for washing dishes and so forth, and it’s easy to take with you if you move.
If you’re concerned about water purity elsewhere in the house, you may be better off with a whole home water filtration system. Read our full review here.
Lodge Cast Iron Skillet
Take a look in my kitchen and you’ll quickly conclude that I’m a bit obsessed with cast iron. Over the last few years, I’ve systematically replaced most of my cookware with cast iron pans, pots, and skillets, and cooking with these brings me joy every day.
There’s nothing quite like a solid Dutch Oven for cooking up a pot of soup, stew, or some delicious bread. And a cast iron skillet is great for searing asparagus, pineapple, and other delicious goodies. If you haven’t tried cast iron yet, give the Lodge Cast Iron Skillet a whirl (View Price on Walmart). After all, these guys have been around since 1896! Read our full review here.
Smeg SIMU530B 31-Inch Electric Induction Smoothtop Style Cooktop
If I had my way, almost every appliance in my kitchen would be made by Smeg. This company makes energy efficiency, high performance, sleek and beautiful cooktops, ranges, refrigerators and more. So, if you’re in the market for a new stovetop, check out Smeg’s eco-credentials, which far outstrip every other company vying for your attention.
The Smeg SIMU530B 31-Inch Electric Induction Smoothtop is a high-performance, environmentally friendly, energy-efficient piece of sleek engineering (View Price on Amazon). The two left zones can be joined together to create an extended cooking zone with booster available to crank out 4000W.
Because it’s an induction stovetop, it’s super safe. But rest assured that there’s also a Child Safety Lock and Automatic Safety Cut-Out, as well as a safe start function to prevent against accidental start-up. You’ll also love the Pan Presence Sensor, Hot Surface Indicator, Simmer Function and Melt Function.
Smeg are exceptionally environmentally conscious. So much so that the company’s headquarters has won awards for its environmentally-friendly design and policies. This includes not building on more than 30-33% of the site, so as to help support habitat conservation. The company even planted more than 4,000 plants. Smeg are also highly selective about the components and materials that go into their products, choosing steel, glass, aluminum and brass, where possible, as these can be easily recycled.

Liebherr Monolith MRB3000 30-Inch Refrigerator
I recently bought a new home and I’m pretty sure the refrigerator will be one of the first appliances to need replacing. Despite the cost, I’m secretly rather excited at the idea of getting a new refrigerator. Why? Because I can get my hands on the Liebherr Monolith (View Price on Amazon).
This super tall, energy-efficient, sleek, high-performance refrigerator freezer is one of the few refrigerators to achieve a full 5/5 Leaf Score rating, thanks in part to its energy efficiency. The Monolith uses just 305 kWh/y, while similar models use up to 447 kWh/yr, and the company offers an impressive warranty far beyond that offered by its competitors.
There are lots of reasons to love Liebherr. The company was the first to convert their entire appliance range to HCFC/CFC-free refrigerants, and one of the first refrigeration manufacturers worldwide to be fully RoHS compliant. They use environmentally-friendly materials, don’t produce waste water that damages the environment, and even heat their offices and production sites with recycled heat from manufacturing.
As for the refrigerator itself, the Liebherr Monolith MRB3000 measures just 30 inches across but offers a 15 cu. ft capacity as it rises to a staggering 84-inches. It features energy-saving BioFresh technology, with independent climate controls for different sections, and PowerCooling to ensure newly stored foods are quickly cooled.
The Liebherr Monolith offers another feature too, one that I can see being extremely helpful for folks like me who live in a more rural area. Liebherr’s smartphone app, SmartDevice, can use internal cameras to let you see what’s in your refrigerator. No more gas-guzzling return trips to the store to get that one crucial ingredient you forgot!
Oh, and the Monolith is very quiet, with a sound rating of just 40 dBA, offers customizable lighting, has a user-friendly touchscreen display, automatic soft door closing, drawers that move smoothly on telescopic rails, and interior stainless steel finish to help eliminate odors. It’s also Star K certified, ENERGY STAR® certified, and conforms to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and RoHS. So, when the time comes, make sure to recycle your old refrigerator and consider the Monolith, or one of our other top picks for eco-friendly refrigerators. Read our full review here.
