You might not think it, but your bathroom can be one of the most toxic places in your home. All those lotions and potions tend to contain potentially toxic chemicals that can harm you, your family, and the environment. From azo dyes in bathmats to xenobiotics in your shampoo, there must be a better way.
Living a healthy, sustainable lifestyle means making eco-friendly choices for bathing, shaving, and whatever else you do in the privacy of your bathroom. To help you find the best non-toxic, eco-friendly bathroom products, we comb over the credentials of so-called ‘green’ companies to figure out which items really are safe and sustainably made.
We’re constantly adding new reviews for products to Leaf Score, so keep checking those out. In the meantime, here are our top picks for eco-friendly, non-toxic bathroom products.
Mühle Silvertip Synthetic Shaving Brush 31M89
My top pick for a high-quality shaving brush, the Mühle 31M89 Silvertip Synthetic Shaving Brush earns 4/5 leaves and is a beautiful statement piece for any bathroom. The brush matches the Mühle R89 safety razor to make a handsome shaving set, and it’s easy to clean and easy to keep in good shape.
The Silvertip 31M89 is a cruelty-free synthetic fiber brush that is soft and absorbent. It creates a great lather with ease and is a perennial favorite among shavers. Made with chrome and several different fiber thicknesses, this brush has great backbone without being too scratchy. And, happily, it won’t smell like a wet badger after you use it.
Why is it eco-friendly? Well, despite being made with synthetic bristles, the 31M89 seems pretty darn durable. It holds onto those bristles and will very likely last you decades, if not the rest of your shaving life. It’s also an absolute pleasure to look at and use. In the long run, it will likely save you many hours of annoyance and plenty of good money thrown after bad brushes.
That said, if something calamitous does happen to the brush knot, you can buy a replacement knot from the company, which means you don’t need to throw the whole thing away. You may even want to find an old shaving brush, remove the knot, and replace it with this one from Mühle for extra eco-friendliness. Oh yeah, and Mühle are a long-established name with a seventy-year reputation for quality craftsmanship and German design and performance.
Mühle Black Fibre Thermo Wood Shaving Brush
If you’re hankering after a wooden handle shaving brush, your best option is likely the Mühle Black Fibre Thermo Wood Shaving Brush. This one also gets 4/5 leaves (because it might not last quite as long as the 31M89) and is made with heat treated ash and synthetic fibers. It has a contemporary natural look, a ring size of 21 mm, soft-tipped bristles with a great backbone.
Mühle process the ash wood with a special heating process to make it durable and water-resistant. As far as I can tell, they don’t use any varnishes, lacquers, stains, or other products on the wood. The knot on the Thermo Wood model is the same size as on the 31M89 but seems to be a little softer. The Thermo Wood might also have a little more backbone, making it a better choice for those who like a bit more scrub to their brush.
Badger Pre-Shave Oil
If you’re looking for a natural, non-toxic, organic pre-shave oil, check out Badger Pre-Shave Oil. Earning 5/5 leaves, this oil is made in the USA from almost entirely certified organic ingredients and is free from parabens and parfums and all the other nasties you know to avoid.
Badger Pre-Shave Oil comes with a top safety rating from the Environmental Working Group, is certified cruelty-free and vegan, with Leaping Bunny and PETA ‘Caring Consumer’ seals of approval and offers a great shave to boot. It is also gluten-free and non-GMO.
All of the ingredients in this oil are recognizable and from natural sources. This includes extra virgin olive oil, seabuckthorn and rosehip extracts blended with baobab oil to enhance glide and prevent razor burn. Used on its own, this oil provides a thin layer of lubrication for shaving. It is best used, however, a few minutes before using a natural shaving soap. For best results, massage a few drops of Badge Pre-Shave Oil onto warm, freshly washed skin, leave for a minute and then lather up with shaving soap.
In addition to making fantastic shaving products, using Fair Trade and organic ingredients where possible, Badger are a B Corporation. They also have an impressive array of energy- and water-saving initiatives and environmental practices at their offices and manufacturing facilities, and their manufacturing processes do not create any toxic waste that could get into the local water system. They also package products in recyclable and reusable tins and use mostly recycled and recyclable packaging, with products shipped UPS carbon neutral. Read our full review here.
Rockwell 6C Razor
The Rockwell 6C Razor is our top pick for an environmentally friendly safety razor made with pure stainless steel. If you treat it well, this razor could last you the rest of your life, which is just one of the reasons it gets a top score of 5/5 leaves from us.
Designed in Canada, the Rockwell 6C Razor is ergonomic, beautiful, easy to use, and has a lifetime warranty. Seriously, if you drop it and it breaks, they’ll ship you another one for free because they hate disposable razors that much.
This fully adjustable safety razor is ideal for any skin type and stubble length, offering a close, comfortable shave. The patented design offers six levels of blade ‘gap’, so you can tailor the closeness, smoothness, and comfort of your shave. This also makes the Rockwell a great choice for beginner shavers who can then adjust as their confidence grows.
The Rockwell 6C is cast from premium high-end chromed zinc alloys and is available in White Chrome or Gunmetal finish. It will pay for itself in just a few months and can help prevent razor burn, cuts, and ingrown hairs.
Rockwell also offer pure Swedish Stainless Steel Blades, with 5 blades included with each razor. Replacement blades cost just 10 cents each and blades can be collected and recycled with other scrap metals, making this wonderfully eco-friendly. The razor itself consists of 1 knurled handle, 1 1/3 Plate, 1 2/4 Plate, 1 5/6 Plate and 1 cap.
We also like the Rockwell 6S. They call this the Heirloom razor and it offers all six blade angle settings in pure 316L stainless steel.
Menstrual cups are a fantastically eco-friendly, reusable, and healthy alternative to tampons and pads, and our top pick is the Diva Cup. Earning 5/5 leaves, the Diva Cup is made in Canada from medical grade silicone and is available in two sizes, one for folks under 30 and those who haven’t given birth (View on Amazon), and one for those over 30 or who have birthed a baby (View on Amazon).
The Diva Cup has been around since 2003 and is sold in at least 21 countries. The company is an industry leader and has won countless awards and accolades. Diva Cup is likely to work for most people who have periods and can dramatically reduce or totally eliminate the need for disposable menstrual management products including toxic tampons and pads.
Diva Cup is very eco-friendly because it can be used for up to a decade or so, if you take proper care of it. This cup is a little less firm than other menstrual cups, which can be good for those who find firmer cups uncomfortable. Also, Diva Cup don’t use any dyes or other additives in their cups (unlike some other companies) and Diva Cup is a certified B Corp. Read our full review here.
If you have a lower cervix, Diva Cup’s longer, thinner design might not work for you. Check out Lunette, Moon Cup (View on Amazon), Lena, or The Keeper instead.
Natracare Organic All Cotton Tampons
Sick of throwing tampons, pads, and liners in the trash? Did you know that you can compost Natracare menstrual management products? Yep, these eco-friendly, organic all-cotton disposable tampons really are the best of the best (if you’re not into or able to use a menstrual cup) and were the world’s first fully certified GOTS organic tampon. They’re also certified by the Soil Association, FDA, and the Vegetarian Society (as vegan-friendly).
Made in the USA from 100% USDA-certified organic cotton, Natracare’s Organic Tampons get a 4/5 rating from us (because they’re still a disposable product). They’re reliable and easy-to-use, are free of synthetic materials, like rayon, and chemical additives; non-chlorine bleached; biodegradable; and free from perfume and dyes.
As a company, Natracare has long led the charge for improved regulation around the manufacture or period products. Their environmental and social sustainability record is exemplary, they remain staunchly independent, transparent (through environmental reports and third-party testing), and are committed to animal welfare as one of the few vegan-certified product ranges in this category.
Natracare tampons are available in applicator or non-applicator versions, with regular, super, and super plus absorbencies available. Always use the lowest absorbency for your needs and change your tampon at least every 4-8 hours.
No leakage or odor, and comfortable to use, you can throw these tampons in your household compost for collection. Natracare tampons (like Organyc and other non-toxic options) are a little more expensive in-store than conventional tampons, so save yourself money by buying in bulk online.

Lunapads/Aisle Classic Reusable Period Pads and Liners
If you mostly use a menstrual cup but want a little back-up, Aisle (formerly Lunapads) reusable period pads and liners are for you. These excellent eco-friendly, non-toxic reusable range of periods pads and liners are made by one of the best B Corporations around.
My top pick is the classic pad, which is made with a 100% organic cotton flannel base, Polyurethane Laminate lining, 100% organic cotton fleece top layer, and nickel-free, silver-plated brass snaps. The insert is 100% organic cotton fleece.
Made in Canada, Aisle’s period products include reusable period pads and liners, and they also sell menstrual cups, period panties, and other personal care products that are good for your health and for the environment. They also support charitable cloth pad initiatives worldwide, through their Pads4Girls and One4Her programs and have likely divert an estimated 1 million disposable pads and tampons from landfill every month.
Aisle are members of the Green America Business and Social Venture Networks, are Climate Smart Business certified, have an excellent Better Business Bureau reputation and are a founding Western Canadian B Corp. They were also a B Corp Best For the World honoree for 2017 and 2018, as well as Best for Changemakers 2017 and Best for Environment 2016. And they publish their annual assessments to maintain transparency.
These reusable pads will likely last at least three years, and possibly much longer if properly cared for. The pads are comfortable, breathable, and soft, and the Classic line includes 6 Pad and 4 Pantyliner sizes with options for a pad and removable insert for extra protection.
- Organic Cotton Maxi Pad & Insert: Cocoa (View on Amazon) / Kaleidoscope (View on Amazon) (approx. 10″ long and 3″ wide when fastened.)

- Organic Cotton Mini Pad & Insert: Cosmic Dancer (View on Amazon) / Undyed (View on Amazon) / Kaleidoscope (View on Amazon) (approx. 8″ long and 2.5″ wide when fastened.)
- The Aisle Performa range isn’t made with organic cotton (yet!) but does offer edge-to-edge leak protection:
- Washable Cloth Maxi Pad: Purple (View on Amazon) / Black (View on Amazon) (approx. 10” long & 3” wide when fastened.)
- Washable Cloth Super Pad: Purple (View on Amazon) / Black (View on Amazon) (approx. 13” long & 3.5” wide when fastened.)
- Washable Cloth Pad (set of 2): Purple (View on Amazon) / Black (View on Amazon) (approx.. 7″ long and 2.5″ wide when fastened.)
- Washable Cloth Mini Pad: Purple (View on Amazon) / Black (View on Amazon) (approx. 8” long & 2.5” wide when fastened.)
Compared to Glad Rags, Lunapads period pads and liners are a little thinner and a little longer, making them better for protection and comfort.
