Overview
Cattail (bulrush) grows in the ponds at the Rawganique homestead on Denman Island and are harvested by hand in early fall. The cattail heads are dried out, put through a handpicker and carded to prepare it for stuffing pillows. As cattail down settles over time, these pillows also features wool from the family sheep on Rawganique’s homestead or collected from their neighbor’s (who would otherwise discard the wool). The sheep are raised on free-range untreated organic pasture and the wool used for the pillow filling comes from pet sheep who need to be sheared once a year, making this product cruelty-free. The wool is washed 8 times in cold water and is then picked and carded by hand. The wool helps to keep the organic cattail down pillow resilient.
Because this pillow is custom-made, it is not returnable. So, be sure that this smaller than standard pillow will work for you before ordering. The company makes this pillow as a way of supporting local artisans and keeping traditional crafts alive.
The organic cattail and wool fill weighs 140 grams. The pillow measures approximately 9″ x 14″. It is not machine washable and should instead be aired out in the sun as needed. Always use a pillow case with this pillow to keep it in good condition. Rawganique offer the pillow by itself, the pillow with an organic cotton case or organic cotton fleece case, hemp case, or linen case, with prices ranging from $49-$71.
Rawganique Organic Cattail and Wool Pillow vs. Rawganique Pure Wool Pillow
Rawganique’s Organic Cattail and Wool Pillow is unique in this category and makes for a lovely travel pillow, child’s pillow, or bed pillow for smaller back sleepers. It has some serious eco-credentials, with raw materials and manufacture all happening on the company’s island homestead, and buying this pillow helps keep traditional arts and crafts alive. It’s only real rival is the company’s pure wool pillow, which may be the better option for back sleepers or those looking for a little more resilience in their pillow (View Price on Rawganique). With that said, the Rawganique Organic Wool Bed Pillow uses wool from the USA, not from Rawganique’s family ‘pet’ sheep, so it cannot be considered cruelty-free.
