Overview

Right from the get-go (way back in 1993), Lunapads committed themselves to pad donations and supporting charitable cloth pad initiatives worldwide, through their Pads4Girls and One4Her programs. These types of programs have been shown in studies to dramatically improve girls’ access to education in Uganda and farther afield. They are responsible for diverting an estimated 1 million disposable pads and tampons from landfill every month.

Lunapads are also committed to mentoring other eco-friendly businesses and start-ups and are members of the Green America Business Network, Social Venture Network, and their local and online Better Business Bureaus. They are also a founding Western Canadian B Corp and a B Corp Best For the World honoree for 2017 and 2018, as well as Best for Changemakers 2017 and Best for Environment 2016. They also publish their assessments to maintain transparency.

These reusable pads will likely last at least three years, and possibly much longer if properly cared for (don’t wash with bleach!). The pads are comfortable, breathable and soft, but they are quite bulky and take some getting used to.

Classic Lunapads have been around since 1993 and are made with 100 percent organic cotton flannel and cotton fleece. The Classic Lunapads are available in 6 Pad and 4 Pantyliner sizes. Classic pads and include options that have both a pad and removable insert for extra protection. These feature a leakproof center panel and a removable, absorbent Insert, so you can customize to accommodate light, moderate or heavy flow. When out and about, it’s easy to remove and replace the inserts; simply store the used insert in a wet bag until you get home and can soak the insert before washing.

The Classic Pantyliners are an all-in-one style, intended for daily use, light menstrual flow, or as back-up protection for a menstrual cup, reusable or disposable tampon, or menstrual disc. These pantyliners do not have the same leak-proof lining as the pads, which makes them highly breathable and comfortable.

Lunapads Performa range is their more recent offering, and the result of years of research and innovation. Sadly, the Performa pads are not currently made with organic cotton, which is why Lunapads don’t yet get the full 5 stars for eco-friendliness. That said, Performa pads are made with a high-performance wicking cotton top and a super-absorbent polyester core, providing edge-to-edge leak protection and superior comfort and reliability. They are excellent for heavy flow and light bladder leaks, are an all-in-one design, and are available in 3 sizes of Pads and 1 Liner.

Lunapads vs. Glad Rags vs. Hesta

Reusable pads are typically a lot thicker than disposable pads, but well worth it if you’re trying to minimize waste and maximize health. Compared to Glad Rags (View Price on Walmart), Lunapads period pads and liners are a little thinner and a little longer, making them better for protection and comfort. You can read our full review of Glad Rags here. Lunapads are pretty good at staying in place, but their clasp system isn’t quite as good as Hesta’s independent wing system, so if you find your Lunapad moves around too much, give Hesta a go for days when you’re out and about (View Price on Amazon).
