Overview

This rug has a bold black and white look and is eco-friendly simply due to its use of recycled leather. The small cotton component appears to be new cotton that is conventionally grown, making this a lot less eco-friendly than organic or recycled cotton rugs. However, since most recycled cotton rugs come in mostly reds, pinks, and lighter blue colors, we included this darker option for those with a more gothic aesthetic.

Bungalow Rose vs. VivaTerra

If you’re looking for something a little different in an eco-friendly rug, the Lebrun Recycled Black Area Rug is a great choice. It is made with 95% recycled materials, which makes it eco-friendly, plus it’s likely to be robust and durable. It does contain 5% non-organic new cotton, however, and it’s not entirely clear if the rug is treated with any chemicals.

The VivaTerra Recycled Indonesian Teak rug is another great option and may be entirely recycled (we’re waiting for a response from the company). Choosing a mat made with recycled wood chips by local artisans is a pretty solid eco-friendly choice, even if it does have to be shipped all the way from Indonesia. That said, we’re also waiting to hear if the company is required to spray this product with pesticides upon its arrival to the US, as happens with most wooden furniture. If so, it may be best to try to track down a rug made with recycled wood chips from a US-based factory.

Naturally, both the wood and leather rugs are better options than VivaTerra’s Bali recycled plastic PET rug, and all three can be used outdoors or indoors.
