Brooklinen Organic Cotton Sheets at a glance
Brooklinen launched its first organic bed and bath collection in 2023 and I jumped at the chance to try out both.
The company has long been making bedding, but this is its first real foray into more sustainable products. The new lines are made with GOTS certified organic cotton and are Oeko-Tex certified too.
I tried out the Percale set for summer and am a fan!
Brooklinen’s Percale Sheet Set includes:
- 1 Flat Sheet
- 1 Fitted Sheet
- 2 Pillowcases.
This makes it a bit different to many sheet sets which, in my experience, typically include only a fitted sheet and pillowcases. While the bundle makes things a bit more affordable, it’s also a tad irritating if you’re not a fan of top sheets and like to just sleep with a comforter, duvet, or blanket.
On the flip side, if you’re really into bundling (not in a Victorian way), Brooklinen offers a Hardcore bedding bundle that also includes the duvet cover and two extra pillowcases to match your sheets.
Brooklinen’s percale is made with long-staple organic cotton and is garment-washed. This means it is essentially pre-shrunk and shouldn’t get smaller when you first wash it. It will get softer with every wash though.
The percale weave makes the sheets light and breathable, and the 300 thread count means these sheets are also durable and less likely to snag and tear.
My experience with Brooklinen Organic Cotton Percale Sheets
When my new Brooklinen bedding arrived I was a bit unimpressed. Not with the bedding itself but with how it was shippped (see below).
Once I got the sheets out of the packaging though, I could appreciate the quality of the bedding. The Marina Blue color is really lovely and rich, and these sheets immediately felt soft and comfortable. This wasn’t too surprising, given that Brooklinen uses garment-washed percale with a 300 thread count.
I definitely notice the difference, though, between Brooklinen’s percale and Homebird’s percale. The latter is just so much crisper and cooler. Brooklinen’s is still cooler than sateen for sleeping but doesn’t have quite the same astonishing cool, crisp feel as Homebird’s.
I love that Brooklinen includes a lot of easy to read labels on the fitted and flat sheets, totally taking the guesswork out of dressing the bed. The fitted sheets have a nice deep pocket that can fit up to 16-inch deep mattresses and they’re elasticated all the way around for ease.
The reusable drawstring bag is also a nice touch. This kind of packaging can help to keep your linen closet tidy, though Brooklinen doesn’t have the handy size label tag on the outside of the bag (Homebird does).
Given that my linen closet is never tidy anyway, I quickly repurposed my Brooklinen fabric bag as a toddler pillowcase! It’s the perfect size for my Turmerry low-profile latex toddler pillow! (I removed the drawstring after taking this photo, though, for safety.)
Out of the box – Brooklinen’s not-so-sustainable packaging
Brooklinen ships its organic sheets in very sturdy branded boxes with reusable organic cotton bags. The trouble is, it also wraps those reusable bags in plastic.
Yes, it feels luxurious and indulgent to receive a Brooklinen box, but the packaging is overkill and wasteful, and Brooklinen could save resources (energy, ink, cardboard, plastic) by switching up its shipping practices.
Sustainability at Brooklinen
Brooklinen’s organic percale sheets are the first organic offerings from this company founded in 2014. The rest of the company’s bedding is Oeko-Tex certified and made with things like conventional cotton, cashmere, silk, and linen, recycled down and feathers, virgin down and feathers, and polyester.
Overall, Brooklinen isn’t any more sustainable than most conventional bedding companies. The big difference is that Brooklinen’s success means it can offer high quality certified organic sheets at a more affordable price than many competitors.
Still, I’d love to see Brooklinen extend its sustainability mandate to the rest of its products. The company is clearly good at making bed and bath products, and cares about comfort, so why not go full bore on eco-friendly, safe, non-toxic products?!
I’ve also tried out the Brooklinen Organic Bath Towels [view here]. and they’re absolutely fantastic – quite possibly the best towels I’ve ever used!
Brooklinen Percale Sheets – Care and maintenance
I got a set of Marina Blue sheets and the color is rich and consistent. I’ve washed the sheets a handful of times now and there’s been no discernable fading or pilling, nor any loose threads or snags. I haven’t noticed any shrinkage, and the sheets have definitely gotten softer with each wash.
Wash your Brooklinen Organic Cotton Percale Sheets on a cold wash and gentle cycle. Avoid using bleach and keep detergent to a minimum as soap residues degrade cotton and make sheets less comfortable. Wash with similar colors or as a separate load, so your sheets don’t get discolored. Avoid washing with synthetics and items with zips or other fasteners, so your sheets don’t accumulate static, fluff, or tears.
Line dry if you can, or dry on low in the machine, removing the sheets right away to minimize wrinkles. Percale is notoriously wrinkly, though these Brooklinen sheets actually seem less wrinkly than other percale sheets I use (Homebird’s, for instance). If you need to, you can iron the sheets on a warm setting.
Brooklinen shipping, warranty, and returns
Brooklinen offers free standard shipping on all orders over $100 in the contiguous U.S. and for orders over $250 in the rest of the U.S.
Brooklinen offers a 365-day return window in case you’re not happy with your new sheets. The company charges a $9.95 return fee deducted from your refund, though you can avoid this fee by returning the item to a Brooklinen store if there’s one near you.
Note that unlike many bedding companies, Brooklinen’s 365-day return window is also for bedding you’ve tried out and washed! If you just don’t like your new percale sheets, even after sleeping on them for a few weeks or even months, you can still get your money back!
For bedding that has been washed or used, Brooklinen works with Good360 to donate sheets to those in need. Read more about that partnership here.
Final thoughts on Brooklinen Percale Organic Cotton Sheets
Brooklinen’s new organic bed and bath collection is great! I definitely recommend the Brooklinen Percale Sheet Set if you’re looking for affordable summer sheets that are breathable, soft, and well-made.
However, my top recommendation for percale sheets is still Homebird (see Review). Those sheets are just so much crisper and cooler, and the company is more eco-friendly overall, with GOTS and Fair Trade certification for all its products.
