Why we love hemp for bedding
Hemp is amazing. As a crop, it requires very little input in the way of water, with no need for artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or other chemicals. In fact, hemp helps to remediate polluted land and helps to tackle soil erosion too! Growing hemp requires less than a third of the land needed to grow the equivalent in cotton fiber and a quarter the amount of water.
As a material, hemp lends itself to a variety of uses. Once upon a time, Ford even made a car using hemp!
As a textile for bedding, hemp is:
- Breathable
- Moisture-wicking
- Thermoregulating
- Naturally anti-odor and antimicrobial
- Easy to clean
- Long-lasting.
There are many reasons to love hemp, and if you’re looking to add a little texture, luxury, and coziness to your bedroom, hemp sheets are a great choice.

Avocado’s Organic Hemp Sheets are the best hemp sheets around. They offer the same elegant drape and casual texture of linen, the same thermoregulating properties, and they get softer with each wash. These hemp sheets are also antimicrobial, helping to keep things feeling fresh even on hot summer nights.
Avocado uses 165 gsm for these hemp sheets, which makes them fairly heavyweight, thick, and durable. They don’t feel stiff or overly heavy, though, and are very similar to linen in how they drape and perform. The fitted sheet has a 16-inch deep pocket to fit most mattresses even with a topper.
Each sheet set includes:
- 1 fitted sheet
- 1 flat sheet
- 2 pillowcases.
As for sustainability, these are the only hemp sheets I’ve found with GOTS organic certification and they also carry MadeSafe certification as extra assurance that these sheets are free of any toxic chemicals or materials.
In addition, Avocado is a Certified Climate Neutral Benefit Corporation and 1% for the Planet Member that uses sustainable packaging and exclusively sells eco-friendly products.
Avocado also offers a matching Hemp Duvet Cover (view on Avocado).
And if you decide these hemp sheets aren’t for you, Avocado offers a 100-night trial with a full refund. These sheets also come with a 1-year warranty.

As with all hemp sheets, the Delilah Home hemp sheets will help you stay cozy in winter and cool in summer. These sheets are also machine washable (using cold water, gentle cycle) and can be dried on low.

ettitude began offering its Linen+ sheets in summer 2023 and they have already gained a following as a more affordable alternative to pure hemp sheets. This blend of 70% bamboo viscose and 30% hemp is similar to their Bamboo Linen offering but has a less wrinkly look and is softer too.
The patented CleanBamboo Hemp™ maintains some of the texture of hemp and these sheets are available in three rich color options (with more soon to be added).
Each sheet set includes:
- 1 fitted sheet with a pocket to fit mattresses up to 17-inches deep
- 1 flat sheet
- 2 pillowcases.
The sheets are pre-washed and generously sized, so you shouldn’t see any shrinkage on first wash. You will get some shedding though, so clear your lint trap if you machine dry these sheets. ettitude includes useful labels for the top/bottom of the fitted sheet, making bedding changes easier.
The sheets are less prone to wrinkles than linen but it’s best practice to shake out the sheets between washing and drying and remove and shake out the sheets immediately after drying.
ettitude ships these sheets in cardboard boxes with a reusable drawstring bag made from fabric scraps as part of its zero-waste approach.
ettitude sources its CleanBamboo from FSC-certified sustainable forests and uses a non-toxic, closed-loop system where 98% of water is recycled. Overall water use and carbon emissions are also much lower for CleanBamboo than for conventional cotton sheets.
FAQs
For the most part, no, it doesn’t matter if hemp is certified organic. However, although hemp farmers growing hemp without organic certification don’t typically use pesticides or artificial fertilizers on hemp, organic certification is still nice to see.
That’s because hemp fiber may be treated with harsh processing chemicals during or after harvesting, in part to make the process faster and cheaper. With GOTS certification, there’s a very strong chance that both the hemp and any processing chemicals are organic, safe, and sustainable. That’s why we love Avocado’s organic hemp sheets so much!
