What we like about the Savvy Rest Organic Kapok Body Pillow
The Savvy Rest Organic Kapok Body Pillow is luxuriously soft, squishable, and comfortable. Kapok is a natural, vegan-friendly, plant-based, and organic alternative to down and has many of the same great qualities. It is breathable, insulating, lofty, and easily compressed, and lends itself very well to use in a body pillow to help you find the perfect sleep position.
Savvy Rest deliberately overstuffs the kapok body pillows, so you can adjust the fill to your exact needs. Many customers report using the extra fill they remove to add stuffing to other adjustable pillows that need a refresh.
Each kapok body pillow comes with an organic cotton encasement with a robust zipper. This makes it easy to adjust the fill level and loft. The pillows also come with an organic cotton sateen pillowcase, and both the case and the cover are machine washable.
You can also add on an organic cotton waterproof pillow protector when buying the pillow and get a great discount compared to buying the two items separately.
Savvy Rest’s Organic Kapok Body Pillow comes in three widths and two lengths.
The 15-inch width version is 46 inches long and ideal for shorter folks with shorter arms (like me!). It’s also a good option if you have a narrower bed.
The 17-inch and 20-inch versions of this pillow are both 52-inches long. This allows most people to comfortably support their arm and leg to prevent twisting of the spine at the shoulders and hips.
Note: The Savvy Rest latex, wool, and wool/latex body pillows only come in 17-inch and 20-inch widths, so if you want a narrower body pillow, the kapok one is your best choice.
Downsides to the Savvy Rest Organic Kapok Body Pillow
As with all kapok pillows, Savvy Rest’s body pillow is likely to lose loft over time. You’ll also want to fluff this pillow regularly, just like down pillows, to keep it feeling fluffy and plump.
This pillow isn’t as firm as the wool or latex versions sold by Savvy Rest. This is a good thing if you love a squishy, soft pillow, but not so good if you’re looking for more robust spinal support.
The other main downside of this pillow is the inability to return it for a refund if it doesn’t quite work for you. Savvy Rest doesn’t accept any returns on bedding unless there’s a clear manufacturing defect. The company argues that it can’t accept returns because it can’t resell them.
However, many other bedding companies do take returns on opened bedding; they just donate the bedding to charities instead of reselling it.
One of the great things about the kapok body pillow is that you can easily adjust the fill to the height you need. This includes being able to adjust the bottom and top halves of the pillow for good spinal alignment.
For instance, you might want to make the bottom of the pillow less plump for better alignment of your knee and lower leg and the top half loftier for comfortable support for your arm and upper body.
Other downsides of this pillow are:
- The cost – organic kapok isn’t cheap, and there’s a lot of it in this overstuffed pillow!
- Potential fire hazard and safety issues.
Kapok is a very flammable material and is also highly oxygen absorbing. This means you need to avoid exposing your pillow to sources of ignition. It’s also likely a good idea to avoid kapok pillows if co-sleeping with a toddler or infant, or if you or a sleep partner has respiratory difficulties. While there’s no research on the effects of kapok on respiratory safety, the material’s love for oxygen could pose a risk for vulnerable sleepers.
Sustainability at Savvy Rest
Savvy Rest is a Benefit Corporation owned by its employees. The company has a long history of community engagement, donating pillows to domestic violence shelters and donating a portion of profits to environmental charities.
As a member of the Carbon Fund, Savvy Rest offsets its annual estimated carbon emissions each year. It also donates to American Forests to support reforestation efforts in America and worldwide (just like Leaf Score!).
Unfortunately, Savvy Rest ships its pillows in plastic for protection. This is similar for most bedding companies, however, and the plastic is recyclable in some places or through TerraCycle.
Final thoughts on Savvy Rest Organic Kapok Body Pillow
Savvy Rest’s Organic Kapok Body Pillow is a comfortable, super soft, flexible and adjustable body pillow perfect for use in pregnancy or if you want a squishable pillow for low-key spinal support. This pillow isn’t as bouncy or firm as Savvy Rest’s shredded latex pillow (see our review), or the company’s wool, or wool and latex, body pillows.
I love that this pillow comes in three widths, including a 15-inch version that is narrower and shorter than most body pillows. This reduces the weight and the amount of space the pillow takes up in your bed, which is great for smaller folks like me.
This pillow also gets a thumbs-up from me for its ease of adjustability and the machine washable covers. And I like that you can add Savvy Rest’s organic cotton waterproof pillow protector too, at a good discount as part of the bundle.
