Buckwheat and wool are both fantastic materials for pillows, but you usually get just one or the other, not both.
Rawganique’s ‘Buckwool’ pillow has two inner compartments, one filled with organic buckwheat hulls and the other with organic wool. This way, you get the best of both worlds.
What we like about Rawganique’s Buckwheat-Wool Pillow
Rawganique’s Buckwheat and Wool Pillow offers:
- All the breathability and adaptability of buckwheat
- All the cozy comfort and softness of wool
- Excellent thermoregulating abilities (on both sides)
- Moisture-wicking, dust mite-resistant, and antimicrobial qualities
- Less of the noise from the buckwheat hulls moving around
- Adjustability (with optional zipper) on both sides.
Whether you’re indecisive or want a pillow for all seasons, this design is absolutely fantastic. You can enjoy the coolness of buckwheat in summer and the coziness of wool in winter, or use your preferred side all year round and still enjoy excellent breathability and help with body temperature regulation.
Buckwheat pillows are an especially good choice for back-sleepers and anyone with neck or shoulder pain. This is because the buckwheat hulls move independently to adapt second by second to fully support your spine.
If you’re curious about buckwheat but wary of how a full buckwheat pillow feels and sounds, this pillow is a wonderful option. You can still benefit from the buckwheat fill but sleep on the wool side for a more familiar-feel and to dampen noise.
All of the materials in this pillow are GOTS certified organic and Rawganique makes each pillow by hand to order in the U.S. The outside cover is U.S.-grown organic cotton twill, unbleached and undyed.
The company offers a wide range of sizes for this pillow, including:
- Travel (12 X 16) – 2 lbs.
- Small (16 X 19) – 4 lbs.
- Standard (20 X 26) – 7 lbs.
- Queen (20 X 30) – 9 lbs.
- King (20 X 36) -13 lbs.
This pillow is firm and supportive but adapts to your head and neck, meaning it feels very comfortable, whichever side you sleep on.
I highly recommend getting the optional zipper. That way, you can adjust the fill on both sides and empty out the contents to clean the twill cover if necessary. You can also easily refresh the fill years down the line, should the buckwheat hulls start to break down or the wool become too flat.
Downsides to the Rawganique Buckwheat – Wool Pillow
The main downsides to this pillow are the price, lack of returns, and that it’s not fully vegan.
That said, for a handmade organic buckwheat and organic wool pillow with two compartments and an organic cotton cover, the price feels fair.
And because this pillow contains GOTS organic wool, there’s a level of assurance that sheep providing the wool are well treated.
It’s also worth noting that the larger sizes of this pillow are heavy. This is normal for a buckwheat pillow and the combination of wool with buckwheat actually makes this pillow a little lighter than pure buckwheat options.
If you choose the pillow without the zipper, bear in mind that this means the pillow is spot-clean only. You can’t remove the fill and fully handwash the outer cotton cover.
Final thoughts on the Rawganique Buckwheat – Wool Pillow
The Rawganique Buckwheat Wool Pillow is a top choice for anyone with neck and back pain. It’s also a really good choice if you sleep hot, like a cooler and more breathable pillow, or have concerns about potential sound disturbance or the feel of buckwheat.
Personally, while I’m very sensitive to noise, I adore my buckwheat pillow and don’t even notice the sound of the shifting hulls once I’ve settled to sleep. And I settle fast because my buckwheat pillow is so comfortable and cool! (See my review of Turmerry’s Buckwheat Pillow.)
All in all, if you can’t decide between wool and buckwheat, this Rawganique pillow is a top choice. It’s also great for every sleep style. Just make sure to get the optional zipper, so you can adjust the fill to meet your needs.
