Why we like the Rawganique Organic Wool Comforter
Rawganique makes its Virginia Comforter by hand in the U.S. using GOTS wool for the batting and GOTS cotton for the cover. The pure wool is carefully carded and the edges serged to make it fluffy and give extra space for loft, which helps keep things cozy.
In most places, this comforter will provide three-season coverage (spring, summer, fall). It can easily work all year round in more temperate climates, though, or if you’re a hot sleeper.
To keep the batting in place, Rawganique using smart quilting. This is great for when you need to shake out or air out the comforter. Without this kind of quilting, all the batting would shift around, clump, and create cold spots and lumps.
This wool comforter is a little lighter than the Rawganique Cotton Comforter (see our review), . The king size weighs 11.5 lb., for example, versus nearly 14 lb. for the cotton comforter. While it’s not as light as a down duvet or kapok, this carded wool duvet is on the lighter side for a wool duvet.
These comforters are typically made to order, which means they aren’t sitting around in a warehouse gathering dust, odors, or other issues.
This wool comforter is made in the U.S. and has an organic cotton cover made using U.S.-grown cotton. Even the thread Rawganique uses to sew it together is GOTS certified organic cotton.
Downsides to the Rawganique Organic Wool Comforter
Rawganique’s wool comforter is an investment. At $600 for a Twin size comforter and more than $700 for a king size comforter, this gem is out of reach for many. The good news, though, is that if you can afford it now, this comforter should last many more years than cheaper, synthetic duvet inserts and actually work out to be a better deal in the long-run.
Because Rawganique makes most of the comforters by hand and to order, you may have to wait 7-10 days for yours to ship. If the company has your size in stock, it should ship faster.
The other main downside to this comforter is that it’s not machine washable. Instead, you’ll want to air out your duvet for a few hours every month or so.
While Rawganique calls this wool comforter a comforter, it’s more like a duvet insert. And it isn’t machine washable. As such, you’ll want to protect it with a washable duvet cover.
Note, though, that this comforter doesn’t have any corner loops or ties. If you’re feeling crafty, you could sew some on. Otherwise, I’d recommend using a snugly fitting duvet cover to prevent the duvet moving around inside the cover. This kind of fit will also make for a loftier, fluffier looking bedding setup.
Sustainability at Rawganique
Rawganique typically ships products plastic-free, with one exception.
If you have multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), you may want your duvet or comforter protected in transit. Rawganique understands this and offers an option for shipping in sealed plastic packaging to help reduce the risk of contamination in transit.
To request alternative packaging, contact Rawganique when making your order.
Rawganique only sells products that are free of hazardous chemicals and materials, but most products don’t carry green certifications. The wool comforter is a rare Rawganique find that comprises GOTS organic wool and GOTS organic cotton.
While these certifications are good to have, we also appreciate Rawganique’s wider ethical framework. The company consistently honors fair working conditions, sustainable material sourcing, and non-toxic manufacturing practices, for instance.
Rawganique also offers a lot of vegan-friendly products. While this wool comforter isn’t vegan, the GOTS certification for the wool, and Rawganique’s general approach, offers reassurance that the wool comes from sheep who are well cared for.
Rawganique’s products are always free of:
- Toxic chemicals
- Pesticides
- PVC, BPA, or phthalates
- Formaldehyde
- Dioxins
- Heavy metals
- Animal testing
- GMOs.
Unlike many successful companies, Rawganique has chosen to remain a small-scale organization. That way, it can better control where it sources materials and ensure its high standards are always met for sustainability and ethics.
Final thoughts on the Rawganique Organic Wool Comforter
The Rawganique Wool Comforter is a real gem. From the GOTS organic certified materials to the smart design and expert craftsmanship, this comforter has it all (almost). The trouble is that you pay for it. And there are no corner ties or clips to tether what is, in essence, a duvet insert and not a standalone comforter.
If you do take the plunge, make sure to keep your investment in good shape with an organic, non-toxic duvet cover.
For a vegan-friendly, all-season comforter, consider the Rawganique Organic Cotton Comforter instead. For lighter use and easier layering, I highly recommend the PACT Organic Cotton Comforter instead [Staff tested and loved!], or Coyuchi’s Diamond Quilted Cotton Comforter.
