What we like about the PlushBeds Handmade EcoWool Comforter
PlushBeds Natural Luxury Handmade Wool Comforter is lightweight but cozy enough for use all year round in many places. It’s a great choice whether you sleep warm or cool as wool naturally helps you regulate your body temperature.
Wool is also moisture-wicking and breathable, making for a less sweaty, more comfortable sleep.
This comforter has a GOTS certified organic cotton cover and is filled with EcoWool.
What is EcoWool? Great question.
While EcoWool isn’t GOTS certified organic, it does come from U.S. farms that practice more sustainable and sheep-friendly farming. In addition, EcoWool is free of harsh chemicals or cleaning agents.
PlushBeds hand-tufts the wool comforter and carefully stitches it shut inside the 344 thread count GOTS organic cotton case. The result is a luxurious, lofty, cozy wool comforter.
Each comforter is made to order, so it won’t have been sitting around gathering dust and who knows what else in a storage facility.
Downsides to the PlushBeds Handmade Wool Comforter
One of the biggest downsides to this comforter is that EcoWool isn’t actually a green certification. Instead, it’s the name given to a kind of wool based on where it comes from. Unlike GOTS organic wool, then, there’s no third-party auditing or oversight of the EcoWool standards to help determine the ethics and sustainability of the wool.
All that said, EcoWool’s program standards are actually more robust in some ways than GOTS certification. The trick is knowing which brands are actually making credible sustainable wool products. Our money is on PlushBeds, with its longstanding reputation for quality.
Because each wool comforter is made to order, you can’t return it unless there is a manufacturing defect.
Note that the warranty lasts just 30 days though, so check your duvet when it arrives!
Other downsides to the PlushBeds wool comforter include the lack of smaller sizes (no crib or toddler size) and more complex care.
This comforter is not machine washable. Instead, you can spot clean the comforter and air it out as needed. Given the cost of this comforter (another downside, especially with it lacking GOTS certification), our advice is to always use a duvet cover that is machine washable.
Sustainability at PlushBeds Handmade Wool Comforter
In addition to using GOTS cotton and more sustainably sourced wool for this comforter, PlushBeds operates out of a GOTS and GOLS certified factory in California.
The longstanding mattress company uses only natural materials – no polyfoams, PFAS, and such – meaning that this comforter won’t come into contact with hazardous chemicals during manufacture.
Since 2008, PlushBeds has run a Green Scholarship program. This disburses funds to students dedicating their lives to environmental advocacy.
Final thoughts on the PlushBeds Handmade Wool Comforter
The PlushBeds Wool Comforter is a good option if you like a bit more luxury and loft in your duvet. It works well all year round in many places and can be layered with an extra blanket in the coldest months or if you sleep cold.
