BC Passive House are a full-service prefabrication company based in Pemberton, BC, Canada. They have offices in Vancouver, BC, and Portland, Oregon, and specialize in the design and construction of high-performance panelized building systems, specialized structural panels (including CLT and NLT) hybrid systems, heavy timber packages and Passive House construction.

What makes them green?

BC Passive House, as the name suggests, specialize in designing and building certified Passive Houses, meaning that their home designs are energy efficient. BC Passive House can supply and install high-efficiency packages that meet standard local code envelope requirements, but they really shine when creating designs that far exceed the basic code requirements. Indeed, this company was involved in the construction of the first registered Passive house built in Canada (in Whistler, BC).

Any downsides?

If you’re a little wary of designing your own home, have no architectural training nor the time to invest in learning about green building practice and all the nomenclature that goes along with it, BC Passive House might not be the best option for you. This company offers exemplary service, but they don’t offer off-the-rack designs, so you’ll need to have a firm vision of your dream home for this collaboration to work, especially if your budget is tight. Making changes at the last minute can seriously derail a prefabrication project and make it much less cost-efficient and eco-friendly than even a conventional build.

What kind of eco-friendly prefab homes do they build?

BC Passive House has experience building custom homes with entry level prices all the way up to complex, high-end structures and commercial projects (including an award-winning museum measuring 55,000 sq. ft.!). This company doesn’t provide standard designs like Living Homes, Unity Homes, or Mandala Homes, but is a great option if you live in the Pacific Northwest and want to be a bit more hands-on in designing your own eco-friendly prefabricated home.

BC Passive House offer initial assessments to see if your project is feasible, followed by design, budget guidance, and precision engineered prefabrication in a controlled factory environment. They also provide a full installation team for onsite work if you need them or can supervise your own team to make sure your prefab is put together properly.

Who are BC Passive House and why should you trust them?

BC Passive House (BCPH) is a full-service prefabrication company owned and operated by the owners of Equilibrium Consulting Inc, an award-winning structural engineering firm, and Dürfeld Constructors, a widely respected general contractor with 40 years of construction experience in the Whistler area, throughout British Columbia, and internationally.

BCPH have an experienced and wide-ranging team with experience in construction project management, framing, heavy timber work, sustainable construction, building science, code compliance and drafting. They are committed to ongoing professional development, so that their team remains up to date with the latest innovations in green building practice.
